My 69

My vin and cowl tag don't match on my 69 camaro. I have owned the car for 30 years.since I bought it ,and to this day it is garnet red (52) (711) black interior.non matching 350 4 speed rs. The cowl tag matches this paint code.I just had heritage report from vintage vehicle services on vin and it came back as daytona yellow with 307 ci x22 rs I'm confused as to what to check next. Any suggestions or ideas would be great

Re: My 69

First of all.... welcome to the site. 307 with an X22? X22 would be a SS396. Are you saying the number on the cowl tag doesn't match the VIN on the dash? If so, don't worry.... they won't. The numbers on the cowl tag were issued when GM accepted the order for the car. Has nothing to do with the VIN. Can you post a picture of the cowl tag?

Experience...... It's what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

Re: My 69

Welcome Wade. As stated the trim tag does not have any part of your vin on it. Visit CRG and take a look at this: http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml

But it does sound as if the trim tag is not the one your vin number was born based on your Canadian GM paperwork. Weird since fake tags were not so common 30 years ago. So the tag maybe legit just from another vehicle.

Re: My 69

I assume your car was built in Van Nuys instead of Norwood? What is the 7th digit of your VIN... an L or a N?

Re: My 69

I think what he means is the report from George Zapora says that his car "according to the Vin" should be a 307 Daytona yellow but his trim tag has it as Garnet red.
Are you sure you decoded the paint code correctly. Does the Zapora report say black interior? If so the only issue may be the color code and you said it has a non matching 350 4 speed. An easy swap. Oh, and when I refer to the Zapora report, he was the one who used to do it for GM. I think he still does, unless he has retired.

I have owned 3 69 Z/28s: Garnet Red 30,000 mi unrestored.

Re: My 69

Hi Wade,

Can you take a clear picture of the cowl tag an post it here. If it is a reproduction or the rivets have been messed with then we will know which is which. It would not hurt also to take a close up picture of the VIN so we can see the rivets from the top. Maybe the cowl tag is fine and the VIN has been messed with. Or then again maybe the Heritage report is wrong. Lets rule one out at a time.

Re: My 69

Wade

The cowl tag looks legit to me and belongs with the car. The 03D means the build date was 4th week in March 1969.

Now if I look at your vin# it looks like N634634 (picture is a bit fuzzy). According to Camaro build records this shows to be mid to late April 1969 assembled car. Hard to see the rivets but fitment of the VIN inside the opening does not appear centered and that could be a sign of as well.

I think we need a few more people to chime in here and look at this and I don't want to scare you but the VIN may not belong to the car. Weird things did happen on the GM production line and this may be one of them considering how close the cowl build date and VIN line up.

One other thing, the interior should be standard red 718 according to the cowl tag.

Re: My 69

Information from CRG site...Possible two week differential so both tags could be legit.

Re: My 69

Welcome Wade! I agree the cowl tag looks original and not been removed. The VIN tag on the other hand, has been removed. The metal dash panel has been replaced with a repro. The square corners and mis-drilled tag holes (which makes the tag off center) is the tell tale sign. I would take your cowl off and validate the hidden vins. Luck!

Kevin
