Newbie

Hi all been lurking around for a couple months checking things out.Inherited a 1968 rs/ss 396 4 speed. Dad owned the car for 30+ years and never even got to drive it. No engine or trans when he bought it. has tons of new parts. Car has been repainted once and still has most of the original paint under the repaint. will have lots of questions for you guys so thanks in advance.

Hard to hear the news about your Dad. Sounds to me like he knew a good thing and would love to know you are keeping the car and getting busy. Welcome.

So I would like a few opinions. The red paint is over the original island teal I have removed 85% of the red. Without the numbers matching engine and trans should I stay all original (besides eng. and trans). I do plan on repainting original color but like the z/28 stripes better than the bumble bee.

Re: Newbie

I'm pretty sure this is what is known as a "do whatever you frickin' want moment!". Plus, I have always loved those wheels!

Re: Newbie

1st off Welcome to TC!
Next off - my opinion is since you do not have the original motor or trans, I wouldn't go original but i'm sure other's wouldn't necessarily agree. You need to decide what your future intentions are with the car and run with it. Whether it be a Daily Driver, Weekend Warrior or trailer queen - then pick your poison of Original, Pro-touring, Pro-street, Resto-mod or anywhere in between. Oh yeah and dig deep into your pockets - then dig a little deeper and you'll soon be caught up to the rest of us

My plans as of now which will probably change many times are original color without the vinyl top and add the spoilers cause he already has them. I want to add the vinyl Z/28 stripes in white so I can remove and add bumble bee stripe later. Add 17"!wheels and lower it 2". Leave the interior all original except driver seat which needs new cover. I have 3 motors to choose from 454, 427, or 396/402 I have a 1968 Muncie 4 speed.

Re: Newbie

I agree with what was said already. If it had the original drive train, it would be an easy decision (for me) to go back stock. Without it, you can restore it stock, and sell it/present it as an original big block car with a replacement motor. I think it would be worth the most doing it this way. It all comes down to what your plans for the car are and your budget.
Enjoy the car, or if it makes you happy, fix it up and sell it, take what you learned and made and purchase the car you want. Good luck!
