Re: Back fire thru carb

Back firing through the carb can be caused by a number of reasons. Starting with a lean condition due to to much carb (not your problem you are a little undersized for displacement), a vacuum leak, or poor adjustment of your accelerator linkage. It can also be excessive timing that is coming on too strong to fast. You may need to change weight and springs in your distributor or adjust the vacuum to the can if it is adjustable. Without looking at your motor as it does this I can only offer generalities. The Service and Diagnostic section of Chiltons or Motors Auto service manual for your year car could help you go through the printed decision tree (If this look at this ... kind of thing).

Re: Back fire thru carb

Does the carb have a choke? Also how do you start it? First crank it over than step on the gas or pump the gas pedal once to the floor then crank it over?
