New (to us) '68 Convert

Hello, All,
After 20 years from selling my first 68 Camaro, and looking over countless cars over that time, one found my wife and I when we were least expecting it, and now it's home.
It was a barn find...from a neighbor of my sister and brother-in-law's whose father had passed 5 years ago; who did not have it listed for sale; who had come to terms with it being time to let one of the cars go that he and his father shared; a man who lived cars with his father (as I did with mine); one who was simply looking for the right owner. Turns out that was us, and we're ecstatic!

I got it running the day we brought it home. July 24th, 2016.
Making it road-worthy again...haven't even washed it yet! (Update in my "garage" as to the current status of it... Looking good!)

Three-owner car(now); 1st owner bought new, second owner bought in 1974, third owners (us), bought in July, 2016.
All original, aside from full quarters done in 1984. Entire car repainted at that time. The car was parked that same year, never to run or move again until Sunday, 7/24/2016.
Driver's seat recovered(Incorrect white), but other than that, nothing else has been done to it. 108,000 original miles. Always stored in protected/conditioned pole barn on concrete and car skates.

We're already taken it hockey practices and dinner once. Working out a couple minor bugs, but what do you expect.
It's a dream!!!

Incredible! That "barn find" is one to be proud of (and envious of for everyone else!)

Re: New (to us) '68 Convert

Thanks, All!

Here are a few to show you what she looks like.
The day we hauled her home.

Back window is torn, so I'l l have to put a new top on, but it's summertime, so... ; )

At this point now, I repainted the wheels and put new tires on her with the derby caps and beauty rings back on. Looking pretty good for what I'd call a survivor. I still need to polish her up, but I at least got the dust washed off. : ) Drove our kids to hockey practice in it!

I also don't know if this will show up any quicker, or if it'll work, but here's a link the "My Garage" here on this site.

Thanks! We're pretty proud of it. Lots of great memories ahead of us with this and our two sons.

Re: New (to us) '68 Convert

Mark did you get a moderation required warning? As a non supporting member the only moderation warning you should have gotten is if you were trying to post a link to an outside website in your first 10 posts but there is noting waiting for moderation unless someone already snapped it through and didn't post it here. As a non supporting member you will hit the storage limit for photos in threads and you can use image tags to off shore sites if you wish but you may get a warning if it is a unusual tag. Using [ img ] [ / img ] tags (without the extra spaces between the bracket and the img code) around the url of your photo "http://myphotos/marksphotos/photo.jpg" will almost always work.

Re: New (to us) '68 Convert

I did get a warning actually. That would make sense then. No worries. I did use the photobucket links and those seemed to work great.

Thanks, Brian!

Our 6 and 9 year old boys named her "Blue Thunder", lol. Not a clue how or where they came up with it, but I'll let it ride. Seems fitting. Doubt I'll call her that, but that's fine. This one, and the '53 Ford that I did will be theirs someday anyway.

The 210hp 327 doesn't really have much "thunder" to it, lol. But it sounds fairly decent; I made a couple exhaust repairs to keep it flowing out the tailpipes. The exhaust is in pretty rough shape but it will get us through the summer...so leading back to the muffler and out the tailpipes it's got a decent V-8 sound(rotting muffler no doub - original or not I don't know-wouldn't think so though with 108,000 miles on it but you never know).

I want a low, throaty sound; not "tinny". I like the sound of the magnaflows, but I see that's a tougher project being a convertible. So don't know what I'll end up with.

Still trying to iron out brake drums getting hot, adjusting, readjusting, etc, and getting used to her...taking her on longer and longer drives until you feel you can trust her. Up to about 10 miles so far, round-trip, lol. This week I'm planning a solid run with her though; 30 miles or so I think. Should be a good test. Everything seems to ok though as far as I can tell, but my wife and boys are the most precious of cargo, so I always want to make certain whenever possible.

Thanks for the notes! I'm just loving all of this!

Blue Thunder works
Reads like she wants some exercise on the road.
Adjust brakes for the same drag, then adjust parking brake last, 7-8 clicks

Re: New (to us) '68 Convert

Took her out for a about a 25 mile run last evening. When we got to the Dairy Queen three drums were all about 130*. The front left was still around 180*. But as we drove more, more starting and stopping that one seemed to come down around 150* but the time we got home and I got out to check it. Those are my main concern I guess. Don't want any fires in the brake drums. I keep the temp gun int eh glove box and will continue to check things as we go places until I'm comfortable.

Doing well so far though!
