Just bought 69 Z/28

Hello, new member here who just bought a 69 Z/28 last weekend. It's a Van Nuys car with the build sheet, Hugger Orange with black stripes and vinyl top. Looking forward to spending some time on the forum!

Welcome from Texas! Curious about it's journey from the left coast to the right. Was it a local purchase for you, or was it closer to Cali when you found it?

Re: Just bought 69 Z/28

Thanks for the compliments! Yeah, I'm pretty excited about this car!

I'm not sure how it exactly got to the East coast, but supposedly it is from Colorado and had 61K miles put on it and then it was in Massachusetts for ~25 years off the road. It was then in New Hampshire for ~10 years and was recently painted in Vermont. They did a nice paint job on it.

It just needs some TLC to clean it up. It's all metal and rust free and did have a GM quarter put on the right side, it still has the tag on it and the seam is at the sail panel. The underside is really clean and all original with original subframe bushings that are still nice, the rear springs are a little tired though.

It has a 350 in it right now but did come with what I believe to be the original 302 which has been rebuilt. It does have a Feb 69 date coded 386 block stamped V0303DZ, the 186 heads with Feb 69 date codes, 4 bolt main, 1178 crank and SRP pistons, not sure of the cam though.

It has the original M-21 in it and the original BU rear end.

My plan is to get it all cleaned up exterior, interior and suspension-wise, then put the 302 in it.

Nice pics of the car above!

Re: Just bought 69 Z/28

I would be tempted to use the 350. A Z is fun if you have something over 410 GEARS to keep the RPMS OVER 3000. If you are wanting to use the 302 to save the 350, I would get a 383.

Talking Re: Just bought 69 Z/28

I would use the 302 and drive it cause the next guy will and that's what it's meant for. I don't understand peoples thinking to preserve stuff and not use it. If it hurts that much then you should sell the car and buy a Vega. The next Generation are into Honda's so they won't have a clue what a 69 Z/28 is. I was at a gas station this summer and some teenager didn't know WTF my car was. That should tell you something.

Re: Just bought 69 Z/28

x2 either put it back in ot stroke it? Put some aluminum tf3 aluminum double humps on, a nicer solid lifter cam and go play. 302s are cool but honestly after experiencing all that tq you wont want one to actually drive.

Re: Just bought 69 Z/28

302s are cool but lousy street cars nowadays

Keep the 350 and/or stroke it. Solid roller cam and badge it as a 302. Add a 5 Speed and you’ll have a bada** car you can actually drive.

Re: Just bought 69 Z/28

Thanks for the suggestions and opinions, good stuff!

I really want to put the 302 in it and I'm thinking of rebuilding the M-21 with a set of M22W gears to help on the street. I've been wanting a 302 for about 30 years now and finally have one so I've got to use it! I've been watching Youtube videos about people driving their 302's and the sound of them is awesome. This car has a deep tone transverse muffler and should sound awesome with the 302 reving and the M-22 whining!

I do have a 67 Firebird 400 with a Ram Air III cam and the M22W gears and a 3.31 posi, so this 302 will give me another type of thrill.
