New member from Montana - 68 RS Z28

Hi there. I just joined. A little about myself

1) I know little about cars, I'm a retired IT guy that bought a 1968 RS Z/28 18 years ago and have been dragging it around for 18 years until I retire to work on it

2) I'm not 100% positive it's a real RS Z/28 but all the indicators I've checked indicate it is. That said I'm hear to learn from the members about things to check. I'll be reading prior posts to learn more.

3) No, it does not have the original engine, it now has a 350 in it

4) It did come with a letter from an appraiser in 1980 that said it was a real RS Z 28 with a swapped out engine (350) I have some documentation from Crane Cams and Morgan Marine for some of the work done.

I have pictures but the forum won't let me upload them now. The car is in rough shape basically the same shape I got it in 18 years ago.

It has a 12 bolt rear end
  • 4 leaf springs
  • Dual exhaust
  • front disk brakes
  • muncie
  • Correct backup lights
  • hideaway headlights

Re: New member from Montana - 68 RS Z28

Without the original 302 the value of the vehicle really suffers, especially with the early ones as there were less than 1000 67 Z28s and less than 7000 68 Zs...I'm also an IT guy, currently re-assembling my 68. It started out as a 307 3-speed manual. Current drivetrain (just rebuilt) is a full roller 327 with M20 4 speed. The engine was put in around 1980, but sat for a long timeÖ.Welcome aboard...Lots of knowledge on this site. What are your plans for the car?

Re: New member from Montana - 68 RS Z28

I plan to get it back to running condition and slowly repair/replace all the critical systems (suspension, brakes, etc.) When I get to paint I'm going to repaint with the same colors (Corvette Bronze and black stripes with black vinyl top).

And drive it.

Re: New member from Montana - 68 RS Z28

Welcome Magoo. Without a paid membership you have to do a certain number of posts before you can post pics. Paid memberships are pretty cheap and worth it for the pic exchange. As I was learning about mine, pics helped others give me guidance and some items to look for to help determine Z status. I felt the experts on the forum preferred to see the pics and tell what they see as opposed to tell what to look for.

If you havent looked yet, peak at CRG Discussion Forum - Index also. They have orphan pages to look for old engine blocks etc. maybe you could match some original parts there and find your engine block.

Iím in a little similar boat as you. Recently inherited a 68 z28 w/out original motor. Needs some work to get it to drive, but looking forward to being able to drive it. https://www.camaros.net/forums/66-wh...68-camaro.html

Best of luck...

Welcome George ! My opinion on a car such as yours is in the link that Dan posted above.

Another way of doing pics here is to store them at photo hosting site such as flickr or imgur (my preference), then copy and paste them here. Very easy to do with no limitations...not mention it's free !

WELCOME to the Gen One Mistress Club.

We all have one thing in common, turn her into the one we always wanted at no expense spared and don't let the wife know how much we spent. The older they are the more they cost, just like the wife.

We thinned the girls down to two 68 Convertibles, but then the wife decided she needed a Jiggalo, so she bought a 66 Sting Ray Convertible.

Welcome, Magoo, to the Club, the Gen One Mistress Club- nice title.
Congrats on your patience with her, correct year and for me, correct color and model.

You could start a Build Project in the Project forum. My suggestion is take plenty of pictures for the logbook as you rebuild her.
One can never have too many pictures and as we get older, we remember less, ask our wives.
Pictures become invaluable later in life as a reference.
Await the pictures.

Non-paid members need to get 10 posts. You will be able to post links and a pic once you get 10 posts in. You are only 4 away.
