A New Guy Saying Hi

Was referred to this site by a fellow forum member from another forum -- said he has been having some really intelligent conversations with you folks. Not that I should be expected to contribute much towards that BUT I still wanted to check in and see what all the commotion was all about.

Listen, guys, I've never owned a Camaro but I have a little story regarding one: When I was in Vietnam back in 1966-early 67 there was a fellow that worked with me that had one of those new car brochures (sp?) you get from the dealer, you know the ones, has snapshots of the car, different color choices, all kinds of stats -- that kind of thing // well, that's all that guy could think about (wait, this is not one of those sad stories where the guy ends up getting killed the day his tour of duty was over -- so please don't jump ahead) what I wanted to tell you was he was saving his GI pay each month so that when he returned to CONUS (continental USA) he could run on down to that local dealership in his hometown and drive away in one of those brand new camaros. That's all he ever talked about. Not much else, just that dream car. Everyone else carried around photos of their best girl (some even had photos of their mother) but old Charlie had a picture of that camaro in his wallet and that brochure (sp?) -- tattered as it was -- ready to be shown at a moments notice when the subject would turn to cars. I'm sure he ended up getting that camaro, probably still has it today. Me -- I ended up buying a corvette (67) when I got back // couldn't afford the payments on it and ended up losing it. Often wished I had put my cash away like old Charlie did for his dream car // If I had, I'd still have that vet today for my grandkids (look but not touch). Smile.

Re: A New Guy Saying Hi

Jerry, I'm new as well. I had flash backs for a moment there. Thought you were talking about me until I read the name "Charlie". I was in the Marine Corps, and in country from Nov. 66 to Dec 67 . I saved my pay, and bought my first car when I got stateside...a 68 396/325 Camaro SS/RS. I was british green, black vynl top, black interior, with white striping. I had the console with gauges and 4 speed muncie. Gave my car up for my fiance, whom I never married anyway. Should never have done that. I just bought a 68 Camaro 396/375, which is currently undergoing restoration to turn it into an SS/RS. This one cost eight times the cost I originally paid. Well, just had to jump in there after reading your story. Good luck and take care. Tom
