what makes mine an SS?

Hey guys I am not a complete dummy w/ camaro's but I am having a hard time finding EXACTLY what made an SS an SS. I know it was some trim but exactly what about the suspension is different? This is my 2nd first gen..lucked out on a clone that I believe is actually not a clone at all. Thanks guys!

Re: what makes mine an SS?

What year?

69's required an L48 350/300HP small block, or any of the 3 available big blocks.Mandatory options with these engines were power front disc brakes, 12 bolt rear axle (unless you got a powerglide transmission with an L48),multileaf rear springs. All 69 SS's except the L78 396/375HP had two fuel lines.

67/68s were slightly different, as they did not require power front disc brakes, and all 67's had mono leaf springs. There were no big block SS's before about 1/1/67, and no factory 67 big block came with A/C.

Re: what makes mine an SS?

Thanks Mark, I just bought a 68 rs/ss CLONE or so I thought. I noticed the rs grill and the reverse lights/turn signals below the bumper(s) and other rs options. I then began to wonder if it was an SS, It has a 350 and a 4speed....Any suggestions...questions?

Dual exhaust? Im not 100% positive on this but i believe they put a little chalk X behind the rear seat on the bulkhead? Dont quote me ofcourse. If you do a search on SS, or "ss/rs" etc... you should find some great information which will help you with your wonderful Camaro. Welcome!

Re: what makes mine an SS?

Look at camaros.org for lots of detail on these options.

What year is your car?
67's had a specific code on the trim tag for SS350 or SS396.
Some 69's had an X code on the trim tag.
68's have nothing at all.

One sure way to tell is a numbers matching engine.

SS was much more than an appearance package. It's a true performance package and their are many differences from a base car.

RS is appearance, and was availble on all models. The biggies of course are the hideaway headlights and backup lights under the bumper, but they also had a lot of extra chrome trim on the body.

Re: what makes mine an SS?

When I actually get the car home, I will tear it apart to get a better look. But so far I think that the trim tag says....

03D
ST 68-12437xxxx LOS
trim 722? BR 3LP?
?11

not real sure just looking at photos...I ll make dang sure make sure there accurate.

Thanks Guys & Gals!
