Powerjection III on a 496

Any have any input on using this EFI on a 496? I searched, but haven't found anyone using it on higher HP engines.

Thanks,
Chuck

Re: Powerjection III on a 496

I'm running it on the engine in my signature. The standard injectors and pump max out around 600hp.

Re: Powerjection III on a 496

That's a shame. I sent them an e-mail today, so I will see if they have any upgrades to handle more HP. If not I guess I can stick with the carb. It looks like nice and clean install.

I looked around as well and it looks like most of the EFI systems max out at 600HP.

Re: Powerjection III on a 496

It shouldn't be an issue. Just ask for the correct sized injectors and fuel pump. The software is set up to allow you to input any injector size, impedence type, and fuel pressure you want. It would just be a matter of talking to them and seeing what they recommend. The throttle body will flow somewhere around 1000cfm. Fred is running the old Powerjection I which the III replaces on his solid roller 427 with north of 600 hp and different injectors than what it came with.

There is a point when running only four injectors where idle quality can be hard to get right due to injector size. The really low pulse widths can get sloppy with really big injectors. They have an MPFI setup as well.

Just call 323-599-5032 and ask for Cody at extension 1404.

X2 The system runs over 950 cfm. I run a powerjection 1 on my 460ci and it adjusts to your engines needs. They also have a 1200 billet model for the big cubes.

Re: Powerjection III on a 496

Thanks for the input. I didn't see any MPFI on Retrotek website, but I will call and see what they say. The Holley HP MPFI looks pretty nice too and they offer a the LCD touch screen.

The Holley setup does look nice and supports up to 800HP.

Re: Powerjection III on a 496

It looks like MPFI is about the only way to go in my case. fast sfi said either a dual carb or MPFI, but would be around 3100. Holley is 2500 but you have to buy the injectors. Also the touch screen can be used as a gauge console, but I haven't seen anything on it except the sema 2009 video.

Anyone got any feed back about this tank from Rick's? One person posted that it was an "awesome" tank?

Looking at Retrotek system as well and spoke with Cody. The "stock" injectors are good to "550-600 HP". Upgrade the injectors ($80) and it is good for "about 700 HP".

Here is the reply I got from Cody at Retrotek:

"Yes the injectors limit the max horse power of the PIII. They
require a high impedance injector which is hard to come by to support
more than 700hp. that is what I call the limit with four 75lb injectors.
You can cheat by increasing the fuel pressure but I cannot make any
guarantees."

I decided to go with the MPFI to be safe. No point in putting money into the Powerjection III if it might not work.

Re: Powerjection III on a 496

I have the boss EFI second gen. 2 from Retrotek. I installed a Procharger on my 454 . It required 4 each 92 lb injectors, a 2 Bar Map and a new load from Cody. It works well. I am getting about 525 HP at the wheels at 1 mile high and 600 Lbs of torque.

Re: Powerjection III on a 496

I have a Frankenstein TBI system for my 12.3:1 static compression 496. I am still tuning it and just now getting back to the car after a 18 month haitus...

The throttle body is an old Holly 950cfm Projection donated by my old man (he's gonna love that when he reads this). The ECU is a MegaSquirt2 version 3.57 with a wideband O2 sensor. The MegaSquirt runs an open source tuning program called MegaTune.

I plan on starting to tune in earnest by the end of September and will revive a very old thread where I promised to document the process. Unfortunately life caught up with me and I got distracted from my car over the last year or so.

My Father is an active poster on this board (Fred Ficarra) has a Retrotek on his radical roller cam BBC. It seems to me that he has a love-like relationship with it (not love/hate). He is much further down the tuning path than I and has many nice things to say about the tech support team at Retrotek. The downside to the MegaSquirt is that they don't dedicated technical support; they do however have a active forum on the internet that helps each other out.
