Gears

My engine builder does'nt like the tall gears I have for my ride, he recommends 3.70's for cruisin. I have a set of 4.86's now. Engine is a 496 bbc w/a th400 tranny and 30x18.5 tires. What are all you big tire guys runnin for cruisin gears?

I may be old and slow, but ........what the heck was I gonna say?

Re: Gears

I had 513 with a 33" tall tire. I went to a 390 with a 33" tall tire and love it. Great for cruisin and a big block doesnt need all that gear. I had the 513 behind a 406 before.

Re: Gears

3.70's should put you where you want to be. I have a 30" tall tire on my Nova and went with 3.50's. 3.70'sshould put you right about 2500RPM @ 65mph.

You can play around here: http://www.richmondgear.com/streetcalculators.html and plug in different gear ratios/cruise speeds and figure out where you want to be

Re: Gears

Again just depends alllll on how your going to use the car!
with your 30" tall tire ummm lets say your going to do double duty mostly street some strip 4.11- 3.90 will work great.

Im running 33x19.5's leaning towards a 4.56 but im running a 406 that bb will pick up a fairly decent gear in the 3.70-3.90 range easy and you'll like it better than the steep ones you have now. and so will your engine!

Depends on how much the car weighs. I would call a place like Chris Alston Chassisworks www.cachassisworks.com and see what they suggest.
