Fuel cell size ??

How big a fuel cell is everyone running?? I was originally going to run a 16 gal Harwood. Now that I'm changing a few things I was curious how big most people run. I'll probably have a custom one built so it will fit the allowable space between the frame rails and have all the fittings on top so they are protected from outsiders. So it won't matter it if hangs a few inches below the valance so I can use the stock filler on my 67.

Thanks. I'm thinking 16 is a good size.

Re: Fuel cell size ??

Dont buy a plastic one. They will eventually sink in the middle.

Re: Fuel cell size ??

The plastic ones do droop in the middle, my fix for that the last time I had a plastic cell was to cut a couple lengths of PVC pipe and use then inside the cell to keep it's shape, worked great.

I prefer a metal cell.

Now as far as size, that will depend on what the use of the car will be. I can tell you a 15 gallon cell get's old fast if you really drive the car. I build a 22 gallon cell for my current car and it makes taking longer trip a little nicer.

What do you plan to run for a fuel pump? If it's going to be electric, then I would re-think putting the fittings in the top, they will need to be in the bottom of the cell.

Since you want to be able to use your filler neck and all that why not get a stainless tank from Ricks? http://www.rickstanks.com/

Re: Fuel cell size ??

Car has been backhalved. Can't fit a stock tank under the frame rails. Had already started to use a 16 gal Harwood with an alum shell around it. Since I'm going all alum I can dump the shell and remove the side brackets. Can have a custom cell build that will fit between the fuel rails and still use the current front and rear mounting points. Should give me about 17-18 gallons and only hang about 3-4 inches below the rear tail panel.

As for the fittings in the top. As long as the fuel pump is below the bottom of the cell it shouldn't be a problem. The siphon effect/gravity will feed the pump once the initial pull gets it primed. I may also go with an in tank pump. Still undecided on that.

That is incorrect. Yes once it starts to siphon it will "work" but you will have issues when the fuel level in the tank gets low (say 3/8 of a tank or so).

Re: Fuel cell size ??

LOoks very similar to how my tank mightlook mounted. How much hangs below the valance?? And it looks like a sumped tank mounted sideways... hmmm nice idea.

Re: Fuel cell size ??

I will take a pic tonight of the installed height. You really cant see it. And yes I installed it sideways to hide the sump from view.
