I am about to buy some head gaskets for a .040 over 327 and have a question, There are 2 different types of steel shim head gaskets listed, i am going to buy .013-.016 compressed thickness gaskets, should i buy the steel shims with rubber coating or just the steel shims with no coating? can the steel shims with no rubber coating be used by themselves or are they to be used with other head gaskets, if that makes any sense....
I used a fel pro 1094 rubber coated steel shim gasket because I'm using aluminum heads. It works with aluminum and trickflow said to install it dry with no coated. Reg steel shims gaskets need a coating like permatex copper coat and I don't think they can be used can use with aluminum heads.

That is what Trickflow told me to do when I used the 1094. This is assuming your deck surface is flat. If your deck surface is not flat, you may still need to coat the 1094's. I laid a straight edge on my deck and tried to fit a .002 feeler gauge under the straight edge. My deck surface checked out ok, so I installed with no coating.
