Sorry for the late reply you asked me the below question about 3D printed parts.
Fascinating. As an old timey draftsman, I find 3D printing amazing. I've used ACAD 3D for presentations but printing was just a dream at the time.
Is this program user friendly? Could someone like me self learn it?
I used https://www.tinkercad.com its autodesks aka AutoCAD free hobbiest version of their software. It super easy Its like dropping a rectangle onto a canvas and dropping another one on top of it of a smaller size and saying cut out the small rectangle from the big one. You can get a lot more advanced but thats basically the idea. With your background and if you give it a couple of hours I think you will be amazed at what you can do. My 3d printer was sub $300 PM if you want details on that, mind you it wont print you show quality parts but is very useful for the odd and ends in pretty much everything, I dont just make auto parts with it. Have a good one!
