i have a 68 camaro with a multi leaf suspension, SSM traction/liftbars,mark williams spool, mark williams high torque axles, mark williams c-clip eliminators. With
550 naturally aspirated HP and an additional 100 horse nitrous boost. I drive this car almost every day during the summer. the leaf spring perches are ripping loose from the axle tubes. The tubes are cracking, the cracks have spidered out and the tubes leak oil. I have quit driving the car until I can resolve the problem with a permanet, safe, dependable solution . I think the spool is probably causing the majority of the problem. I just want to get as many opinions as possible on what you guys think I should do? I am leaning toward a custom axle. Unless anyone knows a cheaper solution or some one who can retube axles for a reasonable price.

Get rid of the spool. It is the cause of your problems, not to mention being dangerous to drive on the street.

DITCH the spool. Install an Eaton.

I think this guy is going to be one of your only choises:

This guy builds Top-Fuel/Funnycar chassis for a living. I use him specifically to straiten housings after modifications IE(changing housing ends, building a trussed housing for offroad applications, building four link suspensions, things that have been in accidents, etc....) He is really, really good.

What numbers are you turning at the track, on the motor?
just out of curiousity.

I have seen this happen a few times. I have a '69 Z-28 housing that did the same thing. I'm saving it for some new tubes. The spring mounts need to be gusseted to keep the tubes from tearing. You may be able to repair the tubes that are in it. If you can't then you may want to get a 8.2 10 bolt housing and remove the axle tubes from it to install in the 12 bolt. You could also send the housing to Moser Engineering and have heavy duty tubes installed with their housing ends for the 9" Ford axle bearings. This would be better than the C clip eliminators.

All right, I have to ask,

How does one remove the steel tubes from the cast iron section to reuse?

The tubes are pressed in and plug welded. You will have to drill or cut the welds out. You can cut the tubes off of the 12 bolt next to the center casting and then split the tube inside to get it out. To get the tubes out of a 10 bolt you will probably have to split the casting.

I welded a 2 inch wide 1/8 inch peice of strap steel over the axle to both ends of the perch. it cured my problems!

no, i doubt that a 4 link woulr cure it.

I do hope you realise that the 4" strap is a temp fix!

well, i don't run a spool either, but i was having problems with my perches and a local dragracer suggested the straps, it's been fine for years.

I agree with jcdubs, a simple strap will stop your perch problem.....and you will also want to weld the tubes to the center section. It will be your next problem....

Gusseting/Assure full welding of the existing perches to the housing and using some BMF U bolts (Like supplied by Hotchkis with their lowering springs) to clamp the axle to the lower spring shock mount plate would do it. I see you have the SSM traction/liftbars. Doesn't that make you use an angled u-bolt? That could be part of the problem. Traction bars when not properly gapped can cause this very thing.
I have seen this issue before. What amount of TQ do you have? , that is what is killing the perches.....
