I am looking at a steel rally wheel that is 17x9 with 51/2 backspace. Planning on a 275/45/17 tire. All of this will be on the rear with a standard 12 bolt rearend. Anybody have experience with a 17x9?

All sounds good but usually a 5.5" b/s works best on a 9.5" wheel,me thinks you should be looking at a 5" b/s which would work better on that wheel.

Isn't that wheel available in a 17x9.5?

Actually a 9" wheel with a 5.5" back spacing will fit just like a 9.5" wheel with respect to the inner fender and shock area. It will have an extra .5" clearence at the fender lip...

A 275/45/17 is not a common size, maybe you mean a 40 series. I think 255/45/17 is about the widest 45 series you will find.

your right, I meant 40 series tire. The next thing I am thinking about is the tailpipe. I had a custom job done that exits between the rear spring and the quarter panel. I may need it bent a liitle to avoid the tire.

IT depends on the exhaust, i had the same issue where the exhaust was don't before the tires & rims. While i was get the tires & rims put on, they said the rears are touching the exhaust so i crawled under the car and had some large wire/cable ties, then strapped a couple on some to put tension on the exhaust to help pull it away from the tire until my exhaust guy fixed... I think i drove it around like that for a month .

P275/40/R17 is common...They were first used on the Corvette around 1989...The 1991 & 1992 Pontiac SLP Firehawk Firebird used that size and that size can be found on 4th gen's as well.....P 245/45/R17 measures nearly the identical overall diameter and is also comparable to a P245/50R16 which is what the 5.7L IROC-Z's ran with...

26.64, 25.68, 25.66....Those are the specs in inches for the overall diameter of the 3 sizes I mentioned above...The P275/40ZR17 was common on the front of the early to mid 1990's ZR1 Corvette which used P315/35/ZR17 on the back...Good luck getting that 315 size to fit on a first gen!! However you''ll see first gen's with P275/40ZR17 on the rear and P245/45/ZR17 on the front...As far as modifying the exhaust, you really shouldn't have to...Forget about bending the 1/4 panel....No way!
