1968 Camaro Windshield Trim Just Ain't Right

Hi Guys,

Wanted to share these pics and get some feedback. Was looking at a really sweet Camaro on eBay with the 68' special door trim which I have been looking at in the box for a few weeks now. Just wanted to take the car over to a friend who owns a body shop first to make sure my gaps look good and maybe even help me put it on so I don't scratch my paint but then I noticed this. Now, I have some real concern about how and why this is the case because its not right. Like I said, I will take this over to a friend of mine in a few weeks when the weather here in Chicago improves but would love to see what you guys think. Thanks again.

P.S Sorry for the car being a little dirty, not as rough as the pics make it look haha

most of pics look like crap, sorry - but you asked . . .
You mean the quality of the picture or what's in the picture? Haha. Agreed both ways but wanted to show you what I have so it had to be a close up. Any ideas why its so far off? Fender too tight in at the top? Windshield maybe just done poorly and needs to be pulled apart and done again?
It's tough with the glare but it looks to me like something nasty enough to distort the metal happened.
Let me open the proverbial kimono a little wider for you guys. This is my real cause for concern because seeing this many shims, leaves me thinking this car got popped on the passenger side and they fixed it up mediocrely. Same nut on driver side and passenger for comparison. And ya sorry for the glare its a real pain in the you know what but without the flash its impossible to see anything.

some thang certainly is not right - correct . . .
Kinda off topic.....but keep us in the loop about those gap adjustments. I have the exact same problem after the car being painted twice.
I’m wondering if the fender is not GM.
I was thinking that could be possible, I just see the rub marks in that corner and think something has to be off with how its hung. I just wonder why both sides are off, not familiar with how that trim is on there but I doubt it was a poor windshield install and its just pushed out. That passenger side has rub marks (which you can see in that pic) so I'm just worried there was damage poorly covered and I will be putting in a new windshield frame which sounds like a pretty major repair.

Is the subframe lined up reasonably close?
It looks like it but truth be told I'm not an expert on what I'm looking for but to my eye, it does not look out of whack. I'm going to do a Roadster shop chassis over the winter when I do a grander overhaul so that might move things around anyways and give me a better idea of what is needed here. First year with the car so still figuring out its quirks.

I just wanted to put that 68' door chrome with the sweeps on but if I do that with the trim out of whack, I might be shooting myself in the foot screwing that in and then needing to move it a half inch to its proper position closer to the windshield trim later.
Stainless door trim can really fit only one way.
That shim stack looks about right for reproduction fenders. Also those top edges where fender meets the trim needs to be checked and trim needs to be test fit and any tweaks made BEFORE paint. Looks like that was not done and someone did whatever was needed to make the trim fit.
Want make sure I am understanding this correct. You are ready to install the optional window bright beltline reveal mouldings and the fit has you questioning your body panel gaps. I have to ask if you are using genuine GM original beltline reveal trim or if these are OER the "licensed" GM replacements. I have had a few 68 Camaros with that GM trim. I had one I added the beltline reveal trim to before changing window sweep weather striping. Wanting to save a few bucks, which I am always willing to consider, I bought the OER set. They were thin, twisted, easily bent and the surfaces were poorly finished, basically unusable junk. I have used a lot of OER stuff over the years, some good, some just garbage. The OER beltline trim falls into that second category for me. But until you see it side by side with the original GM beltline trim you don't know that. The GM part is much heavier, thicker gage and not soft like the OER that bends and damages easily. They also fit. Looking at how the ends of the trim has caved inward makes me think You may be dealing with OER beltline trim. The GM trim can be damaged but you have to really work at it, unlike the OER that is similar to very thin gage soft aluminum and damages very easily.

Buy one of the 4 pieces of GM used on ebay, especially the quarter window beltline because of the complex curves, the difference in quality is day and night. It may save you some grief before you start changing body panel alignment. I went with used GM and it came out great. I hope this helps and you get the issue resolved.
