Hey everyone, I have a question for anyone running a 2nd gen Camaro with the T10 short 3.42 first gear 4-speed.

I am planning on swapping out my current 3.73 r/p for some more overall friendly gears. I have two sets in addition to the 3.73 that are in the car now.

I have a set of 3.23's and a set of 3.08 gears. The carrier is a factory posi and originally had a 3.42 gear behind a 305.

The Camaro is running the 1981 T10 4-speed box with the short 3.42 first gear that came in the car new. The 355 is making 410hp and 400tq. I know these T10's, especially this one is a low tq box from the get-go. I don't plan on heel-toe clutch dumps, I was just wondering what the consensus is on running the 3.08 vs the 3.23 with a 3.42 first gear?

3.42 x 3.08 = 10.53 effective first
3.42 x 3.23 = 11.04 effective first

Kinda apples to apples me thinks?

What say you!

I think I'd go with the 3.08 with that transmission first gear ratio. But I bet the jump from 1st to 2nd is pretty steep.

Yeah I prefer to have the "punch" on the highway rather than light to light.

So the 3.08 @ 70mph has me at or around 2730 rpm's.
The 3.23 @ 70mph cruise puts me at 2865 rpm's.
Rpm drops are high, between 700/900 rpm's between shifts. I think I probably just need to calculate for the point at which my TQ starts coming in. I'm sure either ratio would be fine with my power combo, I was just hoping someone else had this gear setup and could elaborate a bit on the exact driving characteristics I'm going to be dealing with. Pain in the *** doing gear swaps as I have Moser axles with "C" clip eliminators.

On my 1979 Z-28 Pro Touring car. that I converted from a Turbo 350 to a Super T-10 4 speed (2:64 first gear) . I kept the 3:42,s Even when I rebuilt and upgraded (Mosier 30 spline axles Moroso "Brute Strength posi .Bear 12" rear disc brakes .Chevrolet "3:42 gears) the 8.5 10 bolt Because it was the compromise for my use ,It runs around 2600 RPM with a 26 inch tall tire at 60 MPH ..And got fuel mileage in the 20.s Even with a Supercharged 377 cubic inch 500 HP plus small block.
