I was thinking about purchasing a 1985 Camaro, with 96,000 miles on it. The asking price is 1800. The thing is that when I checked the oil, it looked a little light and sort of smelt a little bit like gas. I was wondering what this could be? And is this a good deal?

I'm not one to ask as far as prices go,but there are so many variables anyway.Body/interior condition, engine size and condition. It's always best to know your prouduct.Go see some other camaros in that price range before you buy.Anyway, the oil is light,I assume you don't mean clean. If it's white or creamy looking this is usually water contamination.Could be a blown head gasket,or as simple as moisture building up in the crankcase from to many short trips in cold weather.Try takimg off the oil filler cap and look inside valve covers with a flashlight, this will give a rough idea how good the engine oil has been maintained. It's not going to be "clean",but is there just varnish build-up,or is everything coated in gunk, good indication how often oil was changed, and what kind of driving was mostly done, short city trips-bad,long hiway trips-not so bad.Gas smell can be a number of things, bad fuel pump, rich carb. settings,or again short city trips. This is not always a major deal,or that uncommon. If you don't know cars that well have a gear head buddy take a look at it,or maybe a local mechanic.Good Luck!

It depends how much you are willing to pay to fix it and if you can talk him down.
In my opinion the 305 was not the greatest engine I was looking for camaros where I lived and i found a couple 350's with TPI for about the same price with less miles and the bodies and interiorers were in decent shape. Good Luck.
