I have read many posts regarding Hooker 2457 BBC headers. Most all had fitment issues. Anyone have positive feedback with these headers ??? Please let us know.

I'm having issue right now on my BBC swap.. Correct engine stands and mounts and the 2457 still hit the stock power steering box..

Yeah Hector, Unfortunately I have read about that problem many many times before. Having said that, it seems to always be the case with cars that where NOT originally Big Blocks ? Coincidence, don't know? :confused:

I personally think it's the headers... Can't see how anything else changes... Seems they have a quality control issue...all you need is for the guy or machine welding at the jig to mess up 1/4 inch curve and it isn't going to fit


I can't see the subframe being off that much..and everything else lining up..

Is the problem just the power steering??

For me it is...but I'm also having issues with the power glide shifter cable bracket...

on the plus side of these headers is how easy it is to change spark plugs with the 2457 headers. I can get to every plug with a socket and change plugs in a matter of minutes.

I had to clearance the flanges on my headers, to clear the head bolts, dimple 3 primaries near the P/S box (even with proper frame/motor/trans mounts) and fix the issue where the collector on the driver's side was not parallel so that I could install my exhaust system properly. They take work but can be made to work, but still don't have very good clearance hang down below the frame rails and the collector has a bolt flang reducing clearance by even another 1/2-1".

I have 2457's on a 69 with a 496. They fit my rig perfectly though I don't have PS. No mods necessary at all and for BB headers, that says a lot. Pretty simple install; no PS, no A/C, 4-speed car, lock-out removed. I have AFR heads on this car and I probabaly had to grind on the flanges to clear the lower head bolts.

There's a good 5/8" clearance between the tube and my manual steering box so I'm thinking I'd have clearance if I had PS on this car.

If you're having clearance issues with the PS box, use these headers instead:

Click on the on the photo and you can see how the number 5 tube is routed over the number 7 which provides all the clearance you need around the PS box. I use these headers on another 496 car with PS. But for these, I had to do some re-routing of the fuel line. No big deal.

As far as grinding flanges to clear the lower head bolts, that's a problem you'll likely encounter with any headers with aftermarket heads. Aftermarket heads and their bolts (or worse, studs) will cause clearance issues. Again no big deal. Simply mock up the headers, mark with a Sharpie the areas that need to be ground a bit, and go.

My sense is, many ask too much of the header manafucturers when it comes BB's. If you're running a BB, some adjustments to your new headers will almost always have to take place; even though you have the correct frame and engine mounts and the usually forgotten tranny crossmember. The tranny crossmember comes into play yet people forget; the correct BB crossmembers will move the rear of the engine toward the passenger's side of the car, away from the PS box.

Part of the fun of BB's. It's a huge difference vs. SB headers with 1-5/8" tubes.

You're playing in a different sand box now.

The search for every last HP leads to these problems.

I've always had good luck with hedmans, but I also stick to the conservative side with primary tube diameters of 1-3/4" on BBC and 1-5/8" on SBC.
Until you get past ~500HP on a BBC, 1-3/4" tubes don't give up much.

But I deal with street engines. I do enjoy reading about all the stuff you racers have to overcome ! :D

Yes Ed I know there are many threads on the subject. None of which really pertain to my question. I was looking to find out if anyone out there has power steering and had ZERO issues with the BBC 2457 headers. Thanks.

DT... I had my header problem fixed... Brought some spacer plates that go behind the motor mount..they come in 1/16 and 1/8.. I needed a total of 5/16 and the headers clear everything...and nice clearance to change plugs, oil filter and starter...wasn't as bad a fix as I thought as it was going to be...the owner of the local speed shop tells me he always has to exchange headers... One set may not fit so they exchange it for same part number just a different box and that usually solves the problem...

I guess it all about quality control...
