I finally got a set of BFG G force G sport tires for my new rims. I have AR Hopsters 17x8 with 4.75bs and 235/45/17 up front and 17x9.5 with 5.5bs on the rear with a 255/40/17 BFG G force Gsport tire. I lowered my car with Hotckiss front and rear springs and I have a moser 12 bolt with drums out back. The rear tires look awfully close to to touching the outside quarters. I don't know how much the rear suspension compresses under normal driving, but the middle of the side wall looks like it might touch if the suspension compresses more than a 1 to 1.5 of an inch. There is more than a .5 inch clearance on the inside so I'm not worried about rubbing there. I realize that the only way to know is to drive the car, but its snowing and its parked for the winter so that will have to wait. Has anyone had to roll their fender lips when using the 255's? I took some pictures but I can't post them so I can email them.

For comparison, your 255/40 is 25" tall with a 10.2 section width and I have 255/45's that are 26" tall with a 10.1" section on a 9.5 w/5.5bs wheel.

With drum brakes there was rub on the inside turning through a driveway with a dip in it. I had a little more than 1/2" inner clearence. Using a straight edge placed vertical against the mounted tire I had 3/8" - 5/16" clearence from the tire to the fender lip and no rubbing at all. When I went rear disc the thickness of the rotor hat moved the tire and left me a 1/16" - 1/8" at the fender lip so it required working the fender lip to gain the need clearence.

Use a straight edge (I used a level) placed vertical against the mounted tire, if you have 3/8" - 5/16" clearence from the tire to the fender lip you should be safe.

Thanks for the info DJD. I was wondering how much clearance I needed. I just checked it and I have about 1/8 on the driverside. Passenger is about 3/8. Looks like I'll need to have my fenders rolled a little. Wouldn't be hotrodding if something actually fit without modification.

We took a small air die grinder to mine and removed material off just the area where the tire would be closest. Not too many can even tell it's been worked on...

Thats not a bad idea. My quarters are junk anyway so a little cutting my just do the trick.
