in general yes....but then again i wanna run an 8-71 blower and methanol on the street...for the 99% of the sane people out there stick w/ 4.11's or 3.73's

With your extras you don't need anything close to 4.88s. Build the car with a big fuel tank. A friend has a 32 ford coupe with a 6-71 blown hemi on alky. He almost needs a fuel trailer to go anywhere. The fuel mileage is real bad.

It depends on where and how much you want to drive. I used to have 4.88's in my old '69 Camaro with a 396/375 , Zl-1 cam and M21. This was about 1981 and I was running just around town on Friday-Saturday nights. Alot of fun but very low gear. I was taching about 3,000 rpm @ 40 mph. I could actually start off from a redlight in 3rd gear! I could hardly tell the difference between first and second gear. But let me tell you it was fun stop light to stop light! Smoke the tires in every gear....not recommended gear for anything but a weekend race car...

Probably, bu;t it depends on your tire size
and intended rpm range. I run 4:56 with a 27" tire and an m-21. I tach 4k at 70. Forget about buzzing it down the highway for any length of time.

YES!!! 4.88's are only for the track IMO. It's embarrassing to be on the highway and only be able to cruise at 40MPH - you'll have Yugo's passing you!

Stick to something more reasonable like something in the 3.42 - 3.73 range, even if you have an overdrive tranny. I'm running 3.55's in my 68 Camaro and that is just about right for me - my max cruise speed is 65 mph at 3000 RPM with a 27" tall tire.

I'm going to go with a 30" tire to kill some of my 4.88 gear. (trying to stay under 6700 in the 1/4).

It's not so much embarassing trying to cruise around. Yes, the yugo might pass you if you try and cruise down the freeway, but based on the fact the ground is pounding and the sounds & sweet stink of fuel is coming from your general direction, only an idiot would think they're blowing your doors off.

Yes, fuel milage sux, especially with a 12 gallon tank filled with gas you can't buy at most gas stations.

3.42 to 3.73 is typically sufficient for general street use.

Hey, I was running close to the same setup in 81 too!!

I ran a 67 with 402BB, M20, 12 bolt with 456s!!

But I ran a 30 inch tall tire.

It was a blast. But definitely not something you run on the freeway everyday.

4.88's are good with 8" lift kits and 44" super swampers


I have actually heard of a lot of 302 Z-28 and Boss 302 owners using 4.56-4.88 gears for drag racing because thats what those small, rev happy engines performed best with in the 1/4 mile. IMO, unless you have a huge cam, big single plane intake, big ol' honkin' carb, etc, 4.88's are just too much...especially if you ever want to drive any distance at speeds over 55 mph.

if you stay off the highway! back in the 70's some of my dad's friends used 5.13's, but most backed down to 4.88, so its not impossible, just rediculas IMHO, i'm going for 4.10-4.11 which is the practicle (Ha!) limit for street use on 26-28" tires, if you use 32" tires then you could go with 4.56 or 4.88.

Hey ratchetmaster, those were the days....your '67 looked alot like mine did. Mine was primer gray for a number of years. Kind of funny, the primer would get a little thin, I would go to Nationwise autoparts and get me a new paint job "in the can".
I saved some money and finally got it painted...After I got it painted, I went for the sleeper/stock look with cortez silver, cowl hood, spoilers,no emblems or stripes and ralley wheels/black wall tires. Kind of a different look back in the early '80s. The car was really loud with headers and Thrush mufflers bolted up right behind the collectors....

Just depends on several factors: Do you live in town so all your drives are fairly short? Is your town small so it's mostly 2 lane roads, or is it large with mostly 4-6 lane interstate type highways that you must drive on? I ran 4.88's with a fairly low-profile 15" tire as recently as 3 years ago. With a 383 and a loose 10" converter. When I was in town, no problem. We have no in-town speed limits over 45mph, so that was great and it was fun. HOWEVER, the problem was I live outside of town about 12 miles, and had to drive in everyday to work/shop/eatout etc... Like everyone says, about 40-45 mph is all you want to run for very long and I ALLWAYS had traffic backed up behind me. It did get OLD. But if I lived in town, I would keep them.

This is my first post. Anyway,I have 4:88's in my 69Z. It is perfect with 513/320 cam 302 for in town driving-40-45mph. I will confess to a hone-O-drive that is 30% over,which makes freeway driving possible.
Those two highway trips at 40mph in to Tulsa killed me with all the cars passing me. Side roads worked till I got the OD.

isnt it better for your engine to be taching about 3 grand when your cruising?
I'd say its getting harmful when you cruise at 4000rpms though!

4.88's, No way. I just put in 3.55's and I'm already thankful for the O.D. I would not want any more revs. Then again I'm kinda old.

Welcome 57hippie. Hey a Hon-O-Drive is pretty cool nostalgic piece that you don't hear much about. Isn't that the same OD that Baldwin-Motion used to offer as an option? Has it been a reliable piece for you? Glad to hear you are running a 302! They are few and far between these days. Never been to Tulsa, been to OK City once and Witchita a lot of times, neat drag strip there.

I've heard that Hone-O-Drive was mentioned to me before about Baldwin Motion. I couldn't say for sure though. I was just mentioning to a friend that the 4:88's were great in town,but I hated being passed on the highway and the time it took me to get down to the cruise back then.
He said he just happened to have an O.D.in his attic.It was still in the box with all of the papers. He doubled his $'s and when I bought it saved me close to half of the market price.
It has been pretty reliable,but I don't rack up many miles. In fact the car sits too long and suffers because of it. I now need to freshen up the motor.

The Hone Overdrive was offered by Motion as an option on their cars or outright through their catalog and provide a 30% gear reduction. They were originally used in motorhomes. The company that made them Hone Manufacturing is no longer in business. They pop up on ebay from time to time for about $700-$1,200.
