A person local to me says he has two 427 engines for sale. He says they were truck motors. Are these motors any good and would they make a nice engine for a 69 Camaro? Are they considered big blocks? If they are a good motor to use, what would they be worth? The block casting #s are: 364779 & 473478. Any information on these engines would be helpful.

Thanks,

Clint

364779 1968-88 366 tall truck

473478 1968-84 427 tall truck

Both are "tall deck" engines; you should be able to search here and find out about the fitment issues when using tall deck big blocks.

Clint,
Casting info is as follows............

364779.....366T......68-90...4-bolt

473478.....427T......77-90...4-bolt

Most people tend not to build truck engines for car use because of fitment problems with headers and carburetor/intake manifold clearance issues with the hood. That's jmo.

The tall deck bigblock has a deck height that is about 1/2" taller then a standard bigblock. It can be used to make a good street or race engine. They are all 4 bolt mains and have very thick deck surfaces. The internals use the same crank and rods as a standard deck 427,but the pistons are really tall and have 4 rings on each piston. You could build a regual 427 out of it buy using high performance 427 pistons and aftermarket .400" rods, but the tall deck engine is best suited for a stroker buildup.Using the compact rods that are available today,it may be possible to put a 4.5" crank into it and with a .100" overbore it would be a great way to build a huge engine on a low budget, and the long stroke combo will make for a good street engine.Let me know how mch he wants for theem,if I can get my hands on one I might buy it.
