I think Turbo 400's are cheap; why not build one of those ? They are indestructible !
That Turbo 350 will be toast behind a decent big block.
Not around here anymore. A core th400 is 400 bucks anymore.
I already have the th350 but if it does fail a 400 will go in. The big block is a year or two away. I just need to get rid of the powerglide. It's such a slouch off the line because of it

Wrong. The Blueprint 400 we put in my buddy's 69 dynoed at 518 HP with very good street manners.

Everything for BBC cost more. Heads alone are almost double the cost of a comparable SBC head.
馃ぃ You're veey misguided
I bet that 400 costs more than my 650hp 489 in my 75.
Let's see a 400 blue print costs 7500 bucks. For 518hp....

My 489 I have about 6 grand into

I guess this is the small block fan boy forum 馃ぃ weird you never hear people going from big blocks to small blocks.

Not saying I don't like BBC. I think they are great. Just computing bang for the buck.
Have you looked at prices.
A set of Afr heads for a sbc is 2000
Big block are about 3300.
Now that's both best of the best. At thst point the big block will cream the small block.
Go with the afr 265 and afr 180s and they are cheaper.
You can also shop around and find deals on heads.
I paid 1700 for the jegs heads on my 489(they are profiler).

But a stock bbc head can make more power than many aftermarket sbc heads.

I've built both. I wouldn't go from a BBC to an SBC as I could re-use the BBC parts and not have to change Frame stands, Cross member and other parts needed and perhaps have to deal with the front springs due to heavier engine. Visa Versa that's why I would replace a SBC with another SBC

From BP. Looks like almost 40% higher cost for the BBC? Granted more power with the 496 but you could go SBC 427 and get very close the the 496 #s for $1100 less than the 496 and use the existing parts.

BBC Longblock 600 HP $7800

SBC Longblock 508 HP $5600

If you want real power go LS. I had to say that.

Good Luck with your build. Looking forward to seeing the progress (y)

LS is comparable to bbc a gen 1 small block definitely isn't.

I priced what I found on summit but looking at those two specific engines the bbc is much milder and more powerful below 4k rpm which is where power truly counts on the street.

500 - 525 HP is typical
of a street 383.
GM's best crate 383 with fast-burn heads and single plane intake : 435 hp.
It's a small 220/230 cam; up that to 240/250 and you'll get 475 hp but the manners will suck.

A 6.2 LS with the same cam will get 480 hp.

Are you asking me? if so, Yes, those Brodix heads are oval port but, you already knew that by the description so then i'm not sure what your comment is about.
Nobody uses rectangle ports unless it's a big cube race engine. They suck on the street.
Those 270 race rites will support 600 hp easy.

Can't argue with that. (y)

There are a lot of costs when converting BBC to SBC or LS.

I just admit I love the look of a BBC and am willing to pay for it.

Yep that's my point. A 525hp 383 isn't very streetable like a big block or an LS(only if it's a 6.0 or bigger)

I could say LT. the LT4 650 HP 650 torque in my C7ZO6 is effing badass.

but I also like the 389 3 deuces in my 64 GTO and my son is running 895 rwhp in his C6 ZR1. Over 1000 hp crank. That鈥檚 insane.

just sayin I like it all. SBC BBC LS LT.

Different stroke for different folks. No right no wrong.

The LT is one of my favorites for sure. They make a TON of torque down low compared to their LS counterparts
