My brother builds engines for race boats and he is putting together a 454 for me for my 70 RS. Its a gen 4 block bored .060 over which I beleive is a 468( correct me if I am wrong) The motor will have 9.5-1 compression. We are putting on aluminum head with 320cc/119cc oval port heads. I am looking to get arouind 450HP out of the motor. The question I have is the cam lift to get that kind of HP. He is saying that the lift needs of be around .650 but I think that is a little to radical and think a .550 lift would give the HP that we are looking for. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

Yes a .060 overbore for a 454 = 468cid. For reference to your cam lift question.....my 468 makes 648 HP with a .660 lift solid roller cam/116 cc World Products rectangle port iron heads. Imo, I believe you can achieve your 450 HP with a .550 lift,most certainly with less than .650 lift.

You don't need a very big cam to make 450HP with a 468. The .030" 454 I built for my El Camino made 460HP with stock oval port heads and a 224/230 @ .050" hydraulic roller with .510" lift.

X2...Weren't the LS6 454's purposely underrated on HP @ 450 by Chevrolet to make them more insurance friendly;).

Not clear on how you are coming up with a 320 cc oval port.Typically would expect a rectangular style and the rovals are around 290ish.
Regardless..your goal is is less than 1hp/cid.
Big blocks flat out love lift with the canted and splayed valves.In your case..no need to run extreme spring pressures and shoot for the moon.
A nice retrofit hydraulic roller with .550ish lift,.235*@.050" 110 lsa installed on a 106 icl should meet or exceed your goals and cough up driveabilty and decent manifold vacuum at sane street curb idle rpm.
Not that it matters much..but there is no gen 4.The early production block you have is a Mark IV.

A 320cc head is a mistake on a 454...too large. Really want to stick to a smaller port, like factory iron or the 270/290 Brodix RaceRites, Edelbrock 290cc.

A 320 head belongs a large motor or very high rpm 454. Otherwise, tq/response will suffer.

Very easily doable, but as mentioned steer away from the 320cc head if you can....it will be a torque monster with those heads, but it wont rev up high...maybe 5600-5800 or so....and the heads dont even start to work yet at that point. A 270 or 290 runner would be best, I would go with 270 a nice 230/240 ish duration cam and upwards of around 550-580 lift or so.
