How difficult is it to remove the air conditioning unit from the firewall and still retain a functioning heater? Is there a lot of sheet metal fabrication or is there a blower and cowl assy. from another G.M. car that will fill the hole left in the firewall? The air conditioning does not work and is too expensive to be rebuilt, and I thought the engine compartment would look much cleaner without all the air conditioning equipment. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

I don't know how much this will help, but my 69 has had the AC box cut off flat and glassed over to mount the coil and ignition box. If you leave the rest of the controls intact, the heater, defroster and vacuum controlled vents will still work.

It will take a bit of effort, but if done right it looks pretty good. Cleans up the engine compartment and the heater still works.

You can see it in my sig if you look close.

Those parts are worth some money. I would be careful when taking them off. Have you considered changing the system over to use R134A? I did this and it works fairly well.
