So here's the project I have been working for about a year , going to try to post what I have to date in chronological order.

Car is(was) a basket case 67 , six cyl manual of some sort car. I picked it up over ten years ago and pretty much used it to store stuff in , finally got the bug from reading the forums here and the 48 hour Camaro build ridetech did a while back.(I did do some stripping of junk over the years, had a one piece fiberglass front end, 350sbc/t10,dana open diff???)

So far the plans are to have an 6.0/ls3 heads/intake , 4l80 , full ridetech setup.

Here is how the first 10 years went , me sitting back with a beer planning it out




Build something better than an old boat trailer with a dana rearend to move it around



Get it mounted , just measured equal tubing and welded right to the torque boxes, rear of the frame rails and the front of the framerails






At this point another set of casters in the middle is needed.

So at this point the goal was to get the cab of the car rebuilt. New rocker panels , quarter panels, wheel tubs etc etc

Step 1 was to get new skins on the doors , rebuild the hinges and get the
doors and trunk aligned right , then replace the junk using those as a reference point.

I decided to do a piece at a time VS tearing it down to structure with a jig and reassembling , the deciding factor being the horror stories with aftermarket metal . It was a lot harder/messier doing a piece at a time , but it worked out as I didn't have to worry about the big picture all at once , just kept fighting with each piece to match the factory positions with the confidence it was straight and square.






Blasted , prepped and painted the old shells






I used Body adhesive + welding to attach the skins




Aligned close enough for me




Nasty rust , I entertained the thought of trying to fix this for about 20 seconds. Being a convertible this is fairly important piece, so no. Just no.

Let the destruction commence






I think the roll cage helped a bit to keep things in the right place , I added a few temporary braces here and there as I went







2 packs of sawzall blades later









Parts need for this job , I just couldn't see a way to do it without changing the cowl shroud and the bottom piece of the door jam

Subframe fresh in from the rain


Straight into the dumpster with all the stock suspension



Sandblasting the front subframe



Sprayed it down with gibbs , seemed to keep it from flash rusting , And the
paint stuck to it ok. Don't think I would trust it on the body panels though



I picked up this prime example of a chevy 3/4 ton for 1200 bucks. 6.0 / 4l80 2wd, drove it home and ripped it apart.



GM Muscle car pan .. It is a great deal from GM but looks like the pan is going to hang way to low to be usefull. Will either cut it or go aftermarket when the time comes



Made hokey motor mounts , probably go aftermarket here also as there are just to fugly

In this episode we pick up with the rockers installed , a fairly generic install so we will skip that . I think we are around this fall (2014 ,august-September) , so getting closer to today.

For now the trunk and floor plans were left in place to keep everything lined up , modifications were made to each aftermarket panel to get them in factory shapes positions



Sandblasted and epoxied as I went, all the panels are goodmark. No fitment problems with the outer wheel housings



Again I used a combination of body adhesive/welding , it gets a little yucky welding , burns out the hot area of the glue.




I seem to have a gap in my photos on the fitment issues with the drivers side , so we will skip to the passenger side (drivers side is done ). All the typical problems with the trunk gap , door gaps etc etc



here is the trunk gap , its about 1/4 inch to much , and the curve at the top is almost like its from a different car







All my dang clothes hangers in the house are plastic , took a while to find some metal ones but hit the motherload out in the back closet of my fifth wheel lol



I am so old school , been quite a few years since I did body work, and back then it was always filler on bare metal. Before the days of epoxy I guess but I will get up to speed.






The other issue was this piece .. Perhaps because I forgot to mention to the parts guy this was a convertible? it was way to high and not as wide as factory , so I just replicated the other side






it wasn't to hard to modify the coupe quarters , my understanding is this is how they did it back in the day when vert quarters didn't exist. I left the factory lip on and butt-welded it here , just under the chrome so didn't need to be to perfect but it turned out nice anyway.







Once the quarter were roughed in I dropped out the floors and framerails





Omg what a mess . This is why I have been holding off on epoxy for the garage floor



Speaking of which , here is a little garage floor porn..

This post should get the thread up to date.
Getting the body shell ready for epoxy. I used SPI , it is wonderful stuff




Its always great to see the kids getting involved in these threads , A whole new generation
of car guys/girls learning it takes more than a muffler and a wing to make a car





Red solo cup , while indeed a great receptacle for many things , epoxy mixing is not one them



Fitting the trunk floor for the tubs . I used the goodmark's , gained 2.5" per side



Some DSE subframe connectors. When putting in upside down like this , the "Template inside" sticker is not readily visible :(, but they really only fit one way







And here is how she sits as of 2015. I took two weeks off for Christmas with the intentions of getting the body shell all wrapped up , but with families and festivities nothing getting done till the last 2 days. Its 9 am on a Saturday and I finally got the whole weekend to spend on it

The Firebird Fairy came to town \o/. Funny I ordered the ridetech stuff from Matts Classic Bowties and the body panels from Early-Birds in Canada , on different days , different parts of the continent , and they both showed up in my remote corner of the world 15 minutes apart.

(Both great place to deal with BTW , early-birds had a 20% off all body panels sale over Christmas so I ordered everything I was missing. I phoned about 5 places for the ridetech and Matts pricing was by FAR the best)









Its gonna be great to pull some wrenches on this things after a year of cutting welding grinding .... looking forward to putting this ridetech stuff in.!!!!

I got most of the Ridetech stuff in , nice kit . Being a special snowflake I ignored most places in the instuctions that said "Some cars may require..." . My car required all of those modifications to be done , mostly grinding stuff.

Also I wasn't sure what the tru-turn actual did or what parts it included , turns out you need the old pitman,idler and draglink, so a couple weeks before I can finish it up.


This hole just gets bigger so the little lip on the spacer fits in





The big inner hole needs a 1/4 inch or so on the inboard side




There is a small piece to clearance for the front sway bar , easy enough to do as its being fitted though

the almost finished front




Air bar fit perfect , I choose to weld it in






I am gonna have to leave the back for now , I am dead in the water on the rear diff until my rims get here , hopefully shipping in another month.

Another sat morning.. For some reason updating this thread seems to motivate me to do stuff on the car. I decided to try and get the engine and tranny cleaned up and mounted permanently so I can get the subframe in the car.

I went with a Transmission Specialties 10090LS . listed stall is 2800-3200 . It was in stock and on sale . I have no idea if this converter is what I want or not , always been a 4 spd kinda guy , this is my first auto project . Cant hurt compared to the stock 4l80e converter, its quite a bit smaller and lighter also.



Transmission drove fine when I first got the donor truck , didn't suspect anything wrong.
No gunk in the pan , fluid looked good so I just changed the seals , put in a new filter and cleaned it up




looks like fluid was leaking from this thingy mostly, not on the oring but inside where the wires pass through



I just filled it with epoxy, let set overnight. should be good to go.



Gave it a coat of epoxy. I just couldnt get the case to look pretty. Am almost set on painting the car red , if I go that route I will smooth the firewall and paint the underside red also , should look ok with the trans black.



Another thing of the list... Think I will put the engine up on the stand and have a looksee

Looks great!! Lots of great work you are doing...keep it up!! Love seeing progress pics! You will absolutely LOVE the Ridetech! I installed that on my camaro last winter and it drives awesome!! I also got mine from Matt's! Great place! Keep up the good work!!! :thumbsup:

What exactly was it you needed to clearance for the sway bar? Could you show a picture? I haven't bought my sway bar yet, but I want to clearance everything required before I powdercoat my frame.

lol , looks like I could use a little more grinding also. This is the passenger side , front of car is on the right. If you grind the overhanging piece back to the steel under it , all the way up to where it makes a tee with the main frame you will have a ton of room. (Hope my description makes sense)

Awesome looking build! Our builds have a lot in common. I went with the ridetech coilover and 4 link too. Still building so have not driven the car yet, but it looks good!

Damn these build threads , spent the last couple hours going through yours. Once I start I just cant stop reading , good thread. I see you even had the same blue as me lol

Well That was a pretty good week.... Some more parts came trickling in , I was able to get the engine mostly done, finished the steering, also the brakes showed up so I had to skip work to play with those.

I had planned last week to just get the engine on the stand and pull the heads , was pretty much expecting it to need a full rebuild. Aside from a tremendous amount of orange goop in the water jackets everything looked good.I set each bank straight up and down filled with clr , let sit overnight and flushed it all out with hot water.



I went to the GM dealer to price out some new heads , I was going to go with the cnc ported ls3 heads , but he was unable to get them. Low and behold one of the mechanics heard us talking , he had a set of rebuilt 0821 castings at home I got for next to nothing!!!!! I decided on the spot at the dealership to give up on the ls3 intake/holley EFI setup I was planning and ordered a cam kit, intake manifold , new oil pump and timing chain , and some smexy LSX valve covers with the "Pontiac" label on them.

Anyhow , I got my ugly old LQ4 transformed from this




to this



Still waiting for the valve covers , intake gaskets and another step will be done.

I used the following

GM 12646386 Timing chain
GM 12556436 ls6 oil pump
GM 12499225 ls7 lifter kit
GM 12499224 ls6 Valvesprings
GM 25534401 Intake manifold
GM 19172114 intake gasket set
GM 12498545 head bolts < these are the long bolts up till 2003
GM 88958753 Camshaft( this is the old "Hot Cam" , prob not the best choice but will see)
Holly 302-2 Oil pan

Still need to do some mods to the windage tray , install the timing chain and oil pump and I can set it back in the subframe

Also my idler and pitman arm and backordered ridetech parts came in , so I was able to get the steering finished.

I used a 99 jeep grand Cherokee steering box. It is supposed to be a nice high effort, fast ratio unit similier to the iroc box. The only problem is it turns further than the stock unit , but with my big tires I probably wouldn't get a full sweep with the stock specs anyway(275/35-18 with a 10" rim)




I used a longer pitman arm and idler to get a little more clearance between the pan and the truturn



Lets hope it all fits

Also the Iceing on the cake..





Only issue I had with the brakes/ridetech spindles was I have to shim out the mounts to center the caliper on the rotor







Pretty much blew this months budget , after this weekend I will have a lot of loose ends tied up. Still waiting for the hooker mounts/headers to show up and then it will back to the bodywork grind

Oh yeah , in case anyone goes this route
