How common are these brakes on a 68? What are your opinions on keeping them or going with something alot lighter?

At 20k(+) sold for the RPO-J52 option, out of 230k(+) Camaros, it makes it an under 10% option - fairly rare but not really rare...

As far as 'keeping' the system. My '68 originally had them also.
I just got tired of dealing with the repeated leaks from the '4-spots' and changed the system over to the '69 and later 'Single Piston' type.
I had considered other systems but benefits of the single piston conversion, being so easy and 'near-stock', for a rarely driven stock ragtop didn't warrant anything else.
Weight wasn't a factor...

Others have upgraded their systems to more modern components - hopefully they will chime-in with their input.

Stainless Steel Brakes' claim to fame is making these things work. They will sleeve the cylinders with stainless steel to keep your continual corrosion problems to a minimum with this design which first appeared on the 'vette.

A 4 puck gives better brake action than a single piston but because they were GM's answer to Girlling's race brakes they had maintenance issues most owners would rather not of had to deal with. They are heavier because of the cast iron castings, but are definitely period correct and could earn points in a show over modern billet calipers from Bear, or Wilwood.

My '68 came with them originally but it was trashed long ago (turned into a gasser) so your set just became a little more unique.
