Hi

I’ve been working on my 1968 Camaro since lastJuly and imp finally getting around to starting an actual build page for her.

I found her on Craigslist and from the picturesshe looked to be in good shape. She had new sheet metal from the firewallforward and she was running. When I actually went to see her in person ofcourse I found a lot more wrong from a body stand point. She had rust and rotin the rear quarters, tail pan, rockers (she came with new ones though) anddoors. The man I was buying her from got it from a guy withintentions of restoring, but like most sold her before finishing for his ownreasons. The engine and tranny must have been pulled at some point because fromwhat I can tell the car was originally an automatic. She had all new motormounts. She has a 350 coupled with a 4 speed Muncie (not rock crusher). Thedrive shaft was not connected, the exhaust wasn’t connected, the clutch wasn’tconnected and the gas pedal wasn’t connected either. He was asking 7k for her, but seemed to haveall the parts. I was able to talk him down a little so by the end of the day Ihad my self a 68 Camaro project car.

A lot hadhappened since sense then and I will follow this post with chronological poststo show the Journey she’s been on over this last year. Please stay tuned!

The first project we took on was replacing worn out upper and lower ball joints along with the front sway bar bushings. This was very difficult. Getting out the old ball joints was a nightmare. It seemed like every “kit” I rented to remove them didn’t fit properly. While this was going on I replaced the front and rear shocks, Gas tank and added new Stainless steel gas lines.

The 2nd project we took on was making her stop safe. She had 4 wheel drum brakes so that had to go. We upgraded the 4 wheel power cross drilled and slotted disc brakes with all stainless steel lines from CPP. I got the entire kit from them which worked out pretty good until we got to the point of installing the rear brake lines. Long story short all the rear lines didn’t match up correctly so I had to bend our own lines. At the end of the day I’m really happy with how that all turned out.

The 3rd project we tackled was installed the drive shaft that came with the car. It came to find out that it was the one that was for the original automatic transition. I had to order a longer one for the Manual tranny that was put it at some point. I upgraded to a light weight inland empire driveline high-strength aluminum drive shaft. Its rated up to 500HP. We also connected the clutch assembly and gas pedal. I didn’t take many picture unfortunately of that process, but it went fairly smooth!

We then had to tackle the wiring… it was a mess to say the least. The only aspect of the original wiring that still worked was the car would start as you can see from the engine bay picture. The wiring in the top left gives you a good idea of how messy it was. Nothing else worked. Again this project I didn’t take a lot of pictures of but we used a AAW harness. It worked out pretty well. the 2nd photo was a test of the headlights oce we finished the rewire. I still need to work on the gauges, but I need to order a new set of dash gauges. I will most likely go with the Auto meter package that directly replaces all of the dash gauges with pods. More to come on that when I get around to it.

The exhaust that came with the car was the style that fit over the rear axle. When we tryed installing it we had fitment issues and was missing some hangers that you couldn’t order based on the info I got from their customer service number. At some point in the cars live the floors were either replaced or patched. im not 100% sure so I opted to just have a new system custom made. It’s all stainless steel and 2.5 inch( should of opted for 3in, silly me) True duel exhaust without the cross over pipe. It sounds great!

Now that it’s drivable and registered it was time to look at the interior. Hush matted the entire floor and roof and ordered the carpet. I’m going for the pro-touring style and wanted that to reflect on the interior. The plan was to do a custom interior so I got my wife an industrial sewing machine for our wedding anniversary. Yes yes I know it sounds like a gift for me but she’s been asking for one for a while and she’s extremely crafty. She got me generic racing seats for Xmas. I purchased all of the material to redo the seats we went with black auto vinyl and suede inserts. Following the lime green brake calipers I wanted to do lime green stitching on the seats. This was her first shot at auto upholstery. In my opinion it came out fantastic.

The last two weeks I took out all the glass, removed the doors in preparation to straighten out the front end of the vehicle. I know the doors should have been left on to align the front fenders, but the hinges were shot and the doors were sagging. We will be adding a 4 point roll cage, new rockers, doors, full rear quarters, new tail pan and new grill. We found a lot of rot and a poor fix in the rear roof so that will get fixed with new metal. Hopefully that the last major issue, but I have a sneaking suspicion there will be issues with the inner wheel well. TBD I guess lol

On Sunday we did some major work.. We removed the hood, left fender and rear tail pan. I also took out the gas tank… again.. lol We took out the rear tail pan in prep for installing the new tail pan. Once we got that off which was a huge PIA we noticed a lot of rot in the outer wheel wells and the trunk drop down side filler panels. I ordered the replacement parts so hopefully those will be in any day now.

We made some more progress this weekend. We cut out the rear quarter and rocker. We got the new rocker tacked and patched up some rot in the front
