Yesterday I was out for a drive with my son, go to change lanes and all of a sudden the turn signal lever just falls off. Surprised the heck out of me. The screw holding the lever to the turn signal cam had worked loose.

Get home, pull the wheel, check out the cam (it looked ok) reattached lever with new screw and started to reattach the steering wheel (it's stock). But when I went to put the wheel back on the center shaft, it only goes as far until it meets the splines on the shaft and just stops. I spent 20 minutes shifting the position of the wheel and making sure everything was lined up, but no dice. Jiggled it, shifted it this way and that, etc. I can't start the center nut because the threaded shaft doesn't protrude through the steering wheel hole, it stops flush.

Am I missing something? Is there some trick to getting the wheel back on the shaft? I had the steering wheel off years ago to replace the signal cam and I don't remember it giving me this kind of trouble on reassembly...

is the hole in the wheel assembly lined up with the horn contact extension?

Yes, making sure it's in the hole.

And I have a pencil mark all lined up on the shaft and so forth so I don't reattach the wheel off-center.
Is this a case of I think I'm lining everything up right but I'm not? Do I just have to do a better job of carefully lining everything up to get it started on the splines on the shaft?

When I used the puller, the wheel came off pretty easily, it's not like I had to torque the hell out of it to get it off.

i am 4 states away from my column on the bench to see but you may have just collapsed the center shaft a little and need to pull it out.
