my friend bought a 68 off of e barf. it is a small block. ci? he don't know nothing about the engine. it came with a 1/2" fuel line and an electric pump.
he has been having fuel starvation problems what he tells me.
he lost he electric pump and went to a mechanical holley pump. it run great for about 5 miles and run out of gas. he buys another mechanical pump from advance and it starts and runs.
today he drove it 20 miles to a show with no problem, but going home the car stopped and no gas was in the float bowl
what is the chance of getting to bad fuel pumps
ideas please

Sounds like the tank may have a bunch of junk in it. Pick up may clog as it pulling fuel. No way a 1/2" line should run out of fuel.

I don't know for sure but I would drop the tank and check the gas tank sending unit. It has a sock on the end of it that might be half plugged. While the tank is down disconnect the fuel line on both ends and blow out with air. Check all rubber hose connections at the tank and anywhere else for splits that the pump can suck air. Check the accelerator pump on the carburetor. Plug the ends of the fuel line to the tank with an air fitting on one end. He could blow low air pressure (5-10 lbs) into the line. Turn all air off to see if it holds. Spray fittings with soapy water. That all I can think of.

I agree with Garth. Tank must be loaded with crap. and while your at it cut off that little fuel sock on the sending unit. Many years ago I had this problem with a 73 Buick century only the car would run for 2 or 3 weeks and then die somewhere. I went through 2 Airtex and one A/C pump before I dropped the tank . The results someone put the tape filament out of a 8 track in the tank. The gas dissolved the tape but in doing so created a bunch of tiny fine hairs that clogged the sock . when I blew out the line it would disperse the hairs by the thousands into the gas. Then it would take its time to clog the sock with a fine hairy gel and would clog the fuel. Used the old gas to wash parts had the tank boiled out problem solved.As for cutting off the sock I added an additional inline filter besides the one in the carb . Alex

well the problem has been solved!
he just called me a few minutes ago. he said the tank was clean as could be.
the guy working on the car removed the mechanical pump again and the rod. only to find out the BRASS TIP OF THE ROD WAS GONE????
I said I gave you a correct rod for the mechanical pump along with the pump plate.
he had lost it he said
when did GM go to a brass tipped pump rod? is this something for a roller cam set up that I am un aware of
