I have looked at plenty of LS conversions, but can't seem to find an answer to this question. Will a LS engine fit while retaining the factory AC box on the firewall?

No it won't... Look at my build site link and you can see the pics... My '68 'vert is a factory air car, but due to the coil packs and headers, I had to get rid of the factory air box and go with a VintageAir kit... Besides, the smoothed firewall looks so much better with the modern LS motor. :D

The discussion was about 1st gen camaros and 2gen novas, since the factory a/c fitment should be the same. It definitely fits.

I have vintage air in my 67, and factory air in my 68 and I think a factory a/c is worlds better than a vintage ac unit. Some of that opinion has to do with what part of the country you live in, and how humidity factors into the equation. Where I live an always recirculated air system like vintage ac is pure crap for anything but straight summer air conditioning. ie nearly all of fall, winter, and spring.
