i've always done them by feel- tighten them up until you feel resistance, then turn the nut until you can get a cotter pin thru.
the loosen up a little bit when the bearing get broken in.
my grandpa- a mechanic for 50 years- taught me how to do this.
i've never had wheel bearing problems- and i drive my junk a LOT.
