On the tilt columns I have repaired the nut size was 7/8 or 15/16. You need a special tool to push down on the lock plate to give you access to the spring clip. After that is removed you can remove horn slip ring and spring followed by the turnsignal switch slightly to gain access to the bolts or screws holding the upper part of the tilt column. Slip that part away from the main column but watch where the small parts go they need to go back in the same place to function correctly. Then there are two pins on the side that need a small special puller to remove them. After that then you can carefully slide that away from the main column to get access to the 4 bolts that loosen up and cause a loose upper steering column.

Its not an easy job doing them the first few times. As for the rod I would look in the junkyard for one. That part didn't change much over the years. Good luck.

Thanks for reply. The column that you are speaking about is a newer tilt column thinking 84-85 vintage. this is a 69 has a lot of same parts the lock ring is same as newer unit the 69 tilt uses a preload locking nut to preload bearings on center shaft, new unit the one your speaking of uses a spring cup to preload. i can't come up with socket to remove preload nut. its big 1-1/4 deep thin wall. as far as rod its different as well. 69 4 speed cars had a reverse lock out the ignition rod is what locks column when you shift it in reverse then you shut it off pull key not many parts around.

Been in the game for a long time over 30 years as a mechanic/technician. I have never seen what you are describing. I have a 1969 Camaro, 1970 Malibu, 1969 Chevelle, and other 1974 an newer trucks and cars all with original tilt columns and the lockout assembly as you described. Please send a photo or two. Maybe we can still figure it out.

look at 10-11 the bearing and seat this one uses a cup and spring to preload bearing and ign lock ring and clip hold in place..69 uses a preload nut to set preload. if i had a newer column i could convert it to a newer style by replacing upper tilt shaft

Ok I see what you mean. Can you take off the coupler from the lower shaft and possibly get the shaft assembly to slide up enough to get a wrench on it? Next idea and maybe a touch easier is get a cheap chrome 6pt deep socket and cut the drive off and grind the outer surface so it slide into the spot and use a pipe wrench or weld an arm on the socket to remove the nut.

Thanks for the suggestions. yeah, this is a real bitch on how to deal with this. Here is what i am thinking is to chisel nut in half. Most likely going to screw up treads on shaft buy a old column for parts and replace upper section to next gen columns that uses cup spring preload under the lock ring. And i still haven't addressed the actuator rod i got to come up with. The bummer is i have a real deal z28 rs i might have to go aftermarket might not have a option

not even sure on what size nut is all i know is its bigger then a 1 1/8 12 point. Next size up is 1 1/4 bummer is they come in 6 point. mostly impact sockets
