Right now I have the 6.75" balancer with the TDC mark 2° off the keyway. The pointer that is welded to my original cover is rusted so I'm not able to see the timing marks. I'd like to get a 8" balancer that has the degree marks etched into the balancer for help with timing. I'll have to grind off the pointer and get something like this Tavia pointer. So far I've found this Powerbond 8" balancer for $148.95.
Does anyone know of any other moderatly prices 8" balancers with the timing marks etched in? An 8" balancer should fit under a stock 68 water pump right?
Or should I just go with the GM-3817173 and get an adjustable timing light or some timing tape?
3817173
8" Torsional Damper $86
This damper was originally used on high-performance 302 and 327ci small-blocks produced from 1962-68. Its cast iron inertia ring is 111/16" wide. Damper ID #7173. The timing mark is 2º before keyway center line.
Technical Notes: This damper has the pre-1969 timing mark location. Do not use with chromed timing pointer P/N 12342011 unless TDC mark is adjusted.

What about just getting a new pointer and reuse your original dampener? If you really want marks on the balancer there are timing tapes that look pretty good - you just have to get the right size tape for your balancer (marks on a 8" balancer would be spaced farther apart than marks on a 6-3/4")

the rubber on my original dampener is obviously 35 years old and it's hard and cracked. I'm sure the elastic properties that it used to have are long gone. Plus i've been using a pipe wrench on the hub to turn my engine. :D

i'd put a 6.75" or a 6.61" on and just remark my timing tab, but I can't find one with the 2° TDC mark off the keyway.

I concur with the (non-)elastic properties of 35 yr old h/b.

I would look for a fluid filled dampener sold by Pro Race parts, $149 USD. Marked 50* BTDC.
I have never had any luck with 3 each timing tapes. Cleaned the h/b with lac thinner, Brakleen, and acetone. They came off by the time I had t/gun in hand. I bought a variable t/gun.

Yes, 8" will fit under stock w/pump. I'd drill and tap the crank snout for a retaining bolt, 7/16-20 UNF X2 1/2 inch bolt, or buy bolt & washer from dealer or Summit. Fit a small cross-sectional diameter O-ring between the h/b and crank sprocket to prevent oil leaks.

Wait. Which power steering pump mount do you have? The 8 inch balance won't fit with one of them, the one with the hole through part of it to get a socket on the lower block attaching bolt.

So an 8" will NOT fit with the bracket with a hole in it?
Here are the pics of my pump n bracket:

Everett, i think you are talking about this Fluid Streetdampr by Vibratech in NY. They have an awesome website with tons of information. I'm gonna go with the 6.875" Streetdampr and the 7" Tavia pointer. I can get both from Jegs. Thanks for all the help guys!!!

here's another suggestion; Get whatever balancer is cheap and effective. Bolt on a timing tab. Use a piston stop to find TDC to correspond to the timing tab. Apply a timing tape (which i've had great success with) and GO!

SB Chevy Internally Balanced Balancer
Price: $174.95
Part # ROM0202

The SFI approved Romac 6.25" harmonic balancers are all billet construction. The inner and outer rings are separated by a high quality Neoprene elastomer. They are fully degreed, 60 degrees BTDC and 10 degrees ATDC with easy to read numbers. Indexing at every 90 degree increment aids in the adjusting of your rockers arms.

I bought one for my Bigblock! Nice :D :D
