Wanting to know the pros & cons of computer on this model ??? So, I have a numbers matching 81 Z28 I have started restoring. It's not going to be all original. Too many missing interior parts. Body great shape. Garaged last ten years. I couldn't stand the thought of 190 HP LM1 motor. Bore cleaned up nice at .030 over. I put 041x heads on it. Putting a Nostalgia Plus Comp Cam in it. Pretty much same grind as 70 -72 Z28 but with hydraulic lifters. Wanting to look as original as possible without the smog junk, but with guts! The way it should of been built. A bit of a sleeper if you will. Not wanting too much mods. Just a few. Will the motor mods in mind keep computer check light on? Do I have to have computer to make the air induction working properly? Can I find someone to re-compute ? How costly? Who? just trying to see what is possible & not with this computer.

I cant imagine that it matters if your check engine light works. Not in an 81 anyway. I would just throw a regular hei distributor with vac advance and ditch the electronic carburator. I dont know how the air induction works on that car, maybe just vacuum operated?

Ok thanks. I was thinking of just not running the computer. Done more digging around after post & found that the computer runs the vacuum advance. 81 was first year it wasn't on the distributor. Also, another first for the Camaro, it runs the fuel mixture on the carb. And the great debate, it also possibly locks the torque converter. There seems to be a lot of debate on that. With the engine mods I have made the computer is not an option.

As said, all you need is starter power and control, and a switchable ignition with full battery power for an HEI distributor.
The KISS Principle applies.

Air Induction, the only thing needed is the switch on the pedal and the wiring harness that goes to the solenoid you should be good to go. I bought my 81 Z and it was just a shell still had everything mentioned it works fine. I through the drive train that was supposed to go into my 69 X11 project in it 350 ST10 no issues.
I was told that the switch under the gas pedal was a turbo 400 kick down switch.
