I have an '89 RS 305TBI with Manual Tranny. When the car gets up to temp and I turn it off....it will not start again. It seems the battery and starter are completely dead. With the key in the ON position, there is no dash light display when it's hot. It will start after an hour or so. Cooling problems also plague this car...any suggestions as far as relays, sensors and switches? Fan will not kick on automatically...usually turn the AC on to keep temps down...are there any wiring secrets that I am missing other than wiring the fan to hot and running it full time? Any help would be appreciated...most mechanics around won' even touch it.

Thanks and Drive Fast

I would check the starter where the hot cable from the battery connects and tighten it. I would also check the neg batt cable where it connects to the alternator bracket, and be sure the bolts holding the alt bracket to engine are all tight also. There should be a star washer between the cable and the alt bracket. This bolt strips out sometimes, so put in a longer bolt and put a nut on the bottom side, it MUST be tight.

This is some times a difficult problem, if it just didn't start I would go for the starter solonoid. With no dash lights it has to be in the main hot or neg cables, or it could be loose grounds like body grounds, check all the grounds. If it is a ground loosen it and move it around to help it make contact, and retighten it good.

If none of this works take the main bulk head on the drivers side apart where the main harness goes through the firewall. The early cars have a 3/8 headed bolt in the center on the out side, the later cars have a 10 MM bolt.

Take this apart and find all the male/ female spades now look for one that looks like it has been hot, or is dry looking and this may be it.

And there is more but try this for now.

Thanks a lot, Larry...appreciate your input. I'll check on it and let you know what happens. Once again, thank you...it seems my guys are scared of it...I just want to understand the car better.

See my 89 Starting Problem post from within the last two weeks. Try your neutral safety switch for your "won't start when hot" problem. Mine was an automatic, but I think
manual trans are having the same problem. There is another posting of a "Starter Won't
Turn When Hot". There are a lot of posting on this subject, I believe my neutral switch change fixed my problem, but I may not know for certain until the hot weather returns next summer.
