Distinct "ticking" sound from the upper engine bay, driver side. Does not sound loud like a valve component or rocker directly under a valve cover. Everything above the valve train has been eliminated (trust me).
The Ticking sound is loudest at startup. At startup it can be easily heard and is at a normal hearing level, not a hard knock or pinging.
The ticking sound decreases slowly and steadily as operating temperatures and oil pressure rise.
At full operating conditions the ticking can barely be heard but still there. Always the speed of the ticking is directly related to the engine RPMs.
I have my cards on a collapsed lifter. Or a dirty lifter. While I have it down I will be pulling the oil pan and inspecting for any bearing shavings, god forbid. There is no visual wear signs on the lifter/rods/rocker contact points.
What does this type of noise indicate the problem is to you?
The sound doesnt seem to be coming from right under the valve cover. How is it possible to check the valve for a good seat and no play, while it is mounted in?
The pan is also coming off to clean. The engine sludge is fairly bad and needs a great flush/clean job. Any precautions or opinions on removing the oil pan and/or cleaning?
Thanks for any response. I finally got this engine apart and about to spend what it takes. Ill be back often with updates.

We used to get similar complaints all the time like that on the LT1.

The injectors are noisy!

If you think one or more might be excessive, try using a stethoscope to compare with the others.

Same issue is an occasional complaint on Vipers, until owners understand that the injectors on Vipers are noisy too. Not saying this is the problem, but it could be - check all around the top end with a mechanic's stethoscope and you can locate the source of the noise.

The engine is down. Awaiting comp. rockers/rods/and lifters. Really checked all those injectors and other possible ticking noises previously. Hoping these new valve train components elimenate it. As I mentioned, Im going to pull the pan off before the new BBK headers go on. Inspect the residue. Let you know if I find anything there.
