I have a 99 with the series II V-6. This things runs great, good power etc. But at idle it makes the strangest sound. Sounds "like" an alternator grind from deep in the motor along with a slight knock. Goes away with engine under load, but not right off idle it needs to be loaded. The motor is original with 111*** on it. Oil pressure good, and steady. We have put nearly 10,000 miles on it after buying it and no change to sound.
disclaimer: Adult driven, no burn outs or WOT pulls  yeah right

I have heard this noise from other cars in parking lots etc. Frequently from mini vans of the same era.
Is this common to 3.8s ?
Are there balance rods in these engines? I have looked around and am not finding any info. Aren't these gear driven cams?
