I am in the process of rewiring my 69 vert with the AAW Classic Update kit and I would like to know what kind of tape to use to protect the ignition/starter wires near the exhaust manifold.

The original harness that was in the car (I doubt it was original, car was originally a 6 cylinder and now big block) has white cloth tape, I am assuming this is glass cloth electrical tape. Was this used from factory?

I do not have any plans on running headers, will only be using factory exhaust manifolds. The only change will be engines, current 454 (out of a 74 Suburban per vin stamping) is coming out and a LS6 454 big block will be going in (father in law bought new in 1971).

AAW sells the non adhesive wire wrap in rolls.

On my 69 vert, to deal with the heat issue (I assume you are talking about the main power wire from the alternator to the starter, which AAW diagram shows routing along the oil pain rail and up to the back of the alternator), I chose to run that wire up from the solenoid with the ignition wires coming down to the starter; then, at the bottom of the heater box, I pulled the alternator wire out along the bottom of the firewall box, using the same clips as used on the top studs for the orange heater wire. It went all the way out under the fender/blower motor, and then up over the inner fender and I joined it in with the gen light wire coming over from near the battery. I have it wrapped in the non-stick plastic wire wrap all the way, with the section over the inner fender also in corrugated tubing. I did the black wrap to make it hard to see running under the heater cover, and to wrap it with the gen light wire to make it look like the OE setup.

However, if you were to run it along the oil pan rail with the large gage positive battery cable, you would not have an issue as far as protection from heat. I forget what the heat rating of the AAW wire insulation is, but it is very high. When I asked Donny Bock at AAW why the kit chooses to route this wire along the engine bottom and up behind the alt, he stated that it was because it was the shortest, most efficient route, and that the insulation is more than hardy enough to withstand the heat. I told him how I planned to do it, as described above, because I did not want wires coming in from different sides of the alt, and he said that was also fine.

So, either way, you are good.

Oh, and maybe one other good thing to know is that the last lower heater cover stud (toward the engine, near the starter) should have one of the same style clips on it (the OE harness had a clip wound into it that attached to one of the nearby bellhousing bolts) to keep the wire bundle back close to the firewall and off of the exhaust anyway. I would have reused the OE bellhousing clip, but I misplaced it, and the vinyl covered hook clips like for the heater fan wire are cheap and available.
