would a 454 from an ambulance come through with any more HP than say a 454 from a suburban.

also which would be a better motor for my 67 camaro 454 or a 402 both will be rebuilt ,but is one more heavy duty than the other?

I would believe both would be the same power rating. Ambulance may have alittle more power, as in a different compression ratio, depend upon the year made, I would think.

There is no substitute for CID, at least that is what others say,

Others here may have good suggestions.

If you're going to rebuild it anyway, then the only thing I'd look at is the heads. Just make sure you don't have the small peanut port heads.

As far as choosing between a 454 and a 396, go with the cubes. It costs the same to rebuild one big block as another - so if you built both engines to similar specs, you'd be up by about 50 horses in the 454 just from the extra cubes.

Most emergency vehicles have performance upgrades made to their engines. An ambulance is rather heavy, and to ensure it can still be speedy in stop and go situations, I would assume the engine has been beefed somewhat. I know police interceptor 350's are much more potent than your run of the mill 350.

I know that police interceptor Ford 460s were much more hi-po than the run-of-the-mill civilian 460. One of my buddies is installing a police interceptor 460 in an 84 Mustang LX, and the engine has factory screw-in rocker studs, guideplates, beefier main caps, and much more hi-po heads than the "normal" 460.

At the least, I'd bet the ambulance camshaft is a more aggessive pattern.

I agree with everyone else... go with the cubes. I guess it depends on what the old engine is gonna cost you. There's no replacement for displacement.
And I wouldn't worry whether it's got 4-bolt mains or not unless you're going to build the snot out of it and make it scream at some un-Godly RPM's. You can always have it converted to 4-bolts if you really want to and can afford it.

it looks like its going to be a freebie,just haul it away.
not planning on anything over 10,000 rpm


its suposed to be a mid 70's ambulance,i'll go look at it friday night.

the 402 would be a swap for my 327 thats in the car now.

just thought of something,could this be a 454 tall deck or were they only 427's
how can you tell by looking at them ???

I think that ambulances are based on a Chevy 3500 truck chassis. They probably have the heavy duty towing option and heavy duty (possibly customized for a softer ride) suspension. I doubt the motor is hopped up more than a regular heavy duty truck engine though.

I know the small blocks are more heavy duty on motor homes and anything more heavy duty like pickups with 8600 GVW like a "camper special"

Those engines get aluminized exhaust valves, tri-metal bearings, molly rings, maybe some other stuff too.

Normal pass car and std half and three quarter ton pickup small blocks get plain valves, two metal bearings, plain ductile iron rings.

I would suppose any bigblock engine would be heavy duty to start with, but don't know for sure.
PS, my last pickup was the HD 3/4 ton 8300 GVW model and is still running great and has almost 200k miles on it.
My half ton pickup before that went only 140K miles and had a lot of blowby.
