Well I searched the past engine ID topics and couldn't find it. I recently bought a 69 convertable and the old guy I got it from couldn't remember the engine size. I pulled the numbers from the rear of the block and from inside one valve cover, can anyone help with the ID, The block # is 3892657 & the head # is 3795896 GM4 E113 3. Thanks for the time.

Block shows as a 327, so do heads (small valves); the head was cast May 11, 1963. Check the casting date code on the block (behind the pass. side head where the bellhousing bolts up), and is there a stamped engine plant code on the block pad in front of the pass. side head?

Thanks for the quick response, I will check the pass. side when I get home. Any way to tell if it's a large or small journal? <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by JohnZ:

JohnZ, The best I can make out on the back is H108, does this mean anything? Could it be 807H? Let me know if I need to keep looking! Thanks again,Steve
Almost forgot the pass. front, not sure if it's original, but, V09091 C is stamped in.

The H108 (August 10, 1968) casting date doesn't make sense with the 3892657 block, which was only used in production from '62-'67 based on what I have, unless it's a service replacement. The front pad stamp (V09091 C) says Flint Engine, September 9, but I show no "IC" code - are you sure about the digits after "V0909"? There should be no numbers or spaces - just two letters. Looks like it has a 1968 replacement 327 block with 1963 heads (unless the "E113" on the head is "E118", which would make the heads also cast in 1968).

Sorry for the delay, I re-confirmed the block code and found the 1 to be an E, Therefore it is EC. Regarding the heads, I got that one right the first time! If they are 63 heads then they may be 283 heads? Thanks for your help.

EC could be a 1968 Impala 327 engine with powerglide trans. EC was used starting way back in 1957 for the 283 and was used from 1965 on as the code for a standard 327 engine.
