I'm considering 16" tires and wheels. I scanned nearly all the pictures in this forum, but didn't see any 16"s - at least none identified as such. I would like to see pictures of anyone with 16" tires/wheels on a first gen camaro. Additionally, what size provides the best fit w/out rubbing?

I have 16's on the front. 225-50-16, on 7" rims with 3 7/8" backspace.
They are short lil things, at 23 1/2". Clearance is not a problem ever.
Rears are 255-45-17, soon to be replaced with nitto 555r drag radials, in 275-40-17.

note: pic was taken on the continental divide in Yellowstone National Park, on out Team Camaro Vacation last summer. The Silver 69 belongs to Mark.L.W. If you haven't made this online relationship get personal yet, go for it next summer!

16x8 4.5 BS, 225-50-16, 255-50-16. Depending on what your thing is, straight line or corners, me I wish I opted for the 245-40-16 in front. Hard to come by these days though. If you want a pic send me a PM or email.

I have 16" wheels. Let me say first that my thoughts on this are based on my decision to go with this size and my car, not others. So don't take offense to this, but I regret going with 16" wheels and tires. Here's why:

- The selection of tires is very limited, even more limited than 15". The size ranges are also rather limited.

- The wheel (rim) selection is also very limited.

In general, it seems to me that most wheel and tire manufacturers are following what 'most' in the market want and that is the new big wheel/tire trend, so there are fewer and fewer customers who need a 15". The 16" seems to be caught in the middle.

I use a 215/55 on the front and a 295/50 on the back. Since I have a minitub, its nearly impossible to get a wide 16" tire. I found it wierd that there were manufacturers making wide 16 rims but nobody making a wide 16" tire. I only found Cooper Cobra makes a wide tire in 16".

- I also have a bad feeling that if I ever decide to go with a 15 or 17 inch size, that I will have a bit of a hard time selling my used 16" setup.

On the plus side, I do like the look, as I still can't get on board with the low profile look on my 68 with 17" wheels, but I wanted something bigger than a 15".

One final assumption and mistake that I made: I wanted a larger braking system, and I thought that a 16" would let me run larger rotors, etc. as some brake manufacturers listed 16" wheels on their larger brake packages. But in reality, it will rarely work out that way and you will wind up using 15" brake systems on 16 wheels unless you get lucky on the rim design and backspace. The brake manufactures will have templates that you can download and cut out on cardboard and run inside your rims to see if something fits. The problem is you need the wheel to test that out...

I went to 16'' on custom wheels, used the same offset but could have gone a little deeper. Running 245x50 BFG Gforce tires, no issues. Really can't tell much differance between the 15 or 16". Check my profile for photos.

I have 16x7 TT 2,s on front and 16x8 TT 2,s at the rear with 215/55ZR16 front and 255/50ZR16 rear tires with a 2" lowered suspension and no rub what so ever anytime.I think 17,s look a little cartoonish on a first gen.
16,s will also allow most brake packages....:thumbsup:...

I have a 68 with 16 inch vintage Wheel works V45s. I have 225/50s on the front and 245/50s on the rear. 4.5 backspace all around.
I have 69 Z/28 springs and I had to put round head bolts on the the inner fenders. They don't rub at all now.

Thanks for the great info. My deal is that I like the 15" 'fat tire' look of the classic muscle cars, but as you've said - it's hard to find tires anymore. Even when I found them, no one makes them in white letters - hard to believe I'm the only one that still likes that look. Anyway, I thought the 16" might be easier to find and thought the look might be a little less the 'ALL RIM' look of the 17" and 18". I'm just not too into the 'All RIM'. I will be putting disc brakes on and would like to go with the largest diameter possible - one reason to go with the bigger rims.

If you're looking to run 16s with a 50 series tire why not consider a 17 with a 50 series tire? There are plenty of reasonable priced tire choises and then there is no worry to clear "big" brakes. A 225/50 on a 7" or 8" will work in the front and a 255/50 an an 8" or 9" will work in the rear. It's your car and you need to do what makes you happy but just I'm just trying to give you some options. If you went with those size tires you would have the same tire look as Stewie's red car (post #8).

I had some 16x8 Ronal with 255/50/16 Stones on them made huge dfference in ride/traction ect gotta love good tires! think had like 4.5" backspacing and the good thing is they also fit on my 87 Trans am


also if your looking for inexpensive wheels look at IROC or GTA wheels - I used to have 4 rear 16x8 Iroc wheels on a 70 1/2 rally sport back in the late 80s easy fit and cheap- was like 200$ for the wheels

Thanks for all the input guys, those car pics are sweet! Your cars running 16's have the look and stance that I'm after. I have looked into upgrading to 17" or bigger like everyone else but I just don't know, I'm confused. The tire sizes seem to look like rubber bands, and the prices jump about 50+ bucks a wheel or more just to go up 1 inch and I once had an extreme s-10 (loved that little truck) I ran 18"s on it with 235/40's and the truck looked awesome but road like log wagon, and I guess I'm afraid of that happening with my camaro, especial spending that kinda of money for my car to look good but have a horrible ride, I'd be heart broken. To bad there isn't a try a wheel and see if you like it program..lol. But any way, I just wanted to respond and say thanks again for the welcome and all the info!

My car currently has a set of 16*8 rear and 16*7 fronts with brand new tires on it when i bought the car, i don't care for the wheels so i'm selling them. My new 17*9 rears and 17*8 front VWW 45's are coming in today:hurray: Anyway here is a picture of the car with 245*45 rear tires and 225*50 fronts.
