I use them and so far I've been happy. They undoubtedly do change the camber curve, meaning that the outside wheel goes into negative camber as the car rolls. This means the tyre stays flatter to the pavement and thus grips better.
From what I've heard they also raise the front roll centre and can increase bump steer. Bump steer can be cured/minimised by adjusting the height of the tie rods or steering arms. David Pozzis web site shows how this can be done. I've recently noticed that Baer make a 'bump steer kit' which allows you to adjust the height at which the tie rod meets the steering arm. I'm probably going to try this at some point, though I'll take it to a pro alignment shop to have them fitted so that the toe change at different ride hieghts can be measured.
Roll centres and their effect on handling is a very complicated area that I only half understand. Changing the front roll centre whilst leaving the rear stock is obviously going to change the way in which the car handles. What this is however, I don't know......... (David Pozzi?).
I'd say give em a go. Unlike the Guldstrand mod you dont have to start drilling holes in your car and if you don't like the effect, they can be removed easily.
Hows your ride height with the Hotchkiss springs? You may find that you want to lose a bit at the front if you're going to run the spindle extenders (my car is slammed to the deck).
They raise the roll center by more than is recomended by the "experts".
This improves the camber curve, but the high roll center can cause a jacking effect that will make the front end bob up and down in a turn - "porpoising". I have a report from a Camaro owner that confirms that it happens on a street car.
People who can better get away with this mod have cars that are very low, mainly run the car with banked corners. On a banked circle track it's probably fine.
I talked to another guy who has done the extenders AND the Guldstrand mod!!!
Sorry about the re-set (I'm sure this has been discussed already), but what is the height/length of a stock gen1 spindle? And what is the measurement from the bottom of the spindle to the snout? I'm thinking about ordering some fabricated units from Coleman which are either 7 3/4" or 8 3/4" high/long with the snout 3 3/4" from the bottom of the spindle.
I have the SCP spindles on my 69 Camaro racer.
The 8.5" tall SCP (Stock Car Products) spindle is about an inch taller than a Camaro spindle.
Spindle location is close to a Camaro location.
The steering arms for rear steer are available but they are very long and turn inward a bunch. not good for steering ratio or geometry.
Balljoints required are bigger late 60's chevy truck type. You must change to them or maybe use a tapered shim to space the hole in the spindle down.
Stock Camaro is 7 degree taper, but smaller size.
The extenders make the front end stiffer in roll, similar to a slightly larger antiroll bar. So it would tend to make the car understeer, but the mod gains tractiion too, and that reduces understeer.
Stock forged are 7.125" out to out, I just measured mine.
I have the Pro-Motorsports extnders on my car along with 500+ pound front coils that I am going to have to cut down once my 496 is installed. Also have full poly everywhere, an Addco 1" front sway-bar and am going with 225/45-17 tires on 8" rims on the front.
Can hardly wait to get back to working on my car once I get my Mom squared away. pdq67
