I just noticed that my MSD Blaster 2 ignition coil is arching from the + terminal side to the coil wire. I wrapped all the exposed wires with electric tape thinking that would fix the arching, but no such luck. Is my coil bad or am I missing something here? This coil is pretty old so hopefully I just need to replace it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

Joe

Could be a crack in the coil iteself. Most often, arcing is caused by a high impeadance in the high voltage circuit. Examples are, bad plug wires, bad plugs, missing or damaged rotor, etc. Inspect those parts and see if you can find a cause. Take a resistance measurement of each plug wire. Resistance plug wires have a specified resistance per foot, so no two wires will have the exact same reading. In fact, a wire twice as long as another will have twice as much resistance. For stock resistor wires, the longest wire's resistance should be less than 10K ohms - typically 7K or so. Many performance wires will have much less resistance and some are zero resistance. A bad plug wire will show very high resistance (greater than 10K ohm).

Once an arc begins, a carbon track forms that will make the problem continue even after the cause is removed. Once you find the cause, you might have to sand the area where the arcing was occurring to remove the carbon. Cleaners typically won't do much to remove hard carbon - at least without damaging the plastic. A good doping of the high voltage leads with dielectric grease can help prevent the problem from happening again.

dnult,

Thanks for the info. Its about time I give the Camaro a tune up. It has been a while since I tuned it and last time I had to use cheaper parts due to budget.

DJD,

I thought it may be that too so I tried tightening the nuts. It seemed to stop the arching for about 15 seconds then went right back to arching.

Oh well, I will change everything out with new parts and post again if I have any problems. Thanks guys!
