I was out enjoying the fall weather last week in my '67 327 conv't. All of a sudden it lost power and started running rough and backfiring. I got it home OK but can't figure this one out. It's hard to start and when it is idling it backfires out the exaust in a rythmic cycle. Almost like counting "one, two, three, backfire, one , two rthree, backfire". Also lokks wet on the floof by the exaust (raw fuel, water?). I took off the valve covers and it looks OK I also checked the timing (8 deg. BTDC)I changed the plugs and wires(They all looked good. tan and dry. What next? Head gasket? Cam?

What kind of ignition are you running? My guess is your problem is in the ignition system, not fuel or mechanicals. I had an occasion once where the point gap closed to almost nothing and the car started to run rough and backfire. If its a HEI you might have an ignition module gone bad.

...or perhaps a valve spring(s) have broken. Do a vacuum check...see what the needle has to say. If you have dual exhaust, you might be able to determine which half the engine is backfiring. Let us know what you find.

I have a petronix ignition with a flamethrower coil. I did pull the valve covers and everthing looked OK. I have dual exaust and it is "popping" on both sides.
Is there a way to test the ignition?
