I have 12 volts to my coil when ignition is on, I have checked the ground and it's good but I don't have a spark leaving the coil. I know I probably stating the obvious that the coil is bad but what fails inside the coil. (I'm a rank amature but I'm trying to learn).

I am not sure how you are checking for spark...if just grounding the coil wire and looking for spark, make sure the wire is good.

Its grounding and breaking the ground that creates a spark when the magnetic field collapses.

Make sure you power to the positive side of the coil and check for voltage to be fluctuating on the negative side of the coil while cranking.
If you have a constant 12 volts on the negative side of the coil while cranking the problem is not the coil.

Exactly.

To test a coil connect 12v to the + terminal
Using a jumper wire, ground the - terminal.

When you release the ground on the - terminal, the coil will generate a spark.
