I think I have my plans for the short block ironed out. Now I need to consider the top end.

I'm putting the bulk of my engine budget into a good short block that I can build on as my car progresses. It will be a 383 stroker block. For now, I just need to decide on a head/cam combo that will be cheap and not choke the engine.

Any suggestions on how to optimize the heads/cam for performance with a low budget? I'm fine with searching for used parts on craigslist and ebay. This will be a street car that won't see over 5k RPM.

Thoughts?

Give a couple of reputable machine shops a call and see what they have on hand as far as heads go...most of them will have some stuff hanging around that they may be willing to part with for a decent price...

Everyone gets so caught up in the "best heads" money can buy...many stock, or slightly worked stock heads can perform very well on a true street motor, like you are describing...

If the motor will not see over 5K RPM, the old double hump heads (461 or 462's) could work very well for your build, and you can likely get a pair fairly inexpensively--they generally go for about $200-$250 on craigslist, and another $200-$300 in machine work--hot tank, valve job and setting up the springs for your cam (maybe even new springs) can get you on the road within your budget!

if u wanna say cheap heads but their very good heads and u'll have the best flow I say vortec;s and u can also port them later the 383 would love them heads at least get up today heads since u got the extra cubic inches

I was thinking a set of used L31 vortecs would be a good option. I've been reading up on them and it sounds like they definitely flow better than double hump heads.

I found on the comp cams website a form where you can tell them all about your engine and they'll respond with some cam options. We'll see what they say. So many choices out there....

I like Keith's idea of calling your local machine shops, you can get some good deals on used stuff.
Otherwise I doubt you can beat a set of Vortech heads, they would work great on your build. Still there are costs you have to consider, like specific intake and any other misc. parts like springs or rockers, which goes for any head. It adds up fast but it can be done.
