I am building a 454 and am looking to make 450 to 500 hp. My question is what head casting numbers will be able to produce this with out a lot of work. I am looking at making this a driver not a racer but still want the power. I was told 791 and 049 were good any others. I am not that familiar with big blocks. Any info will be helpful.

781's and 049's are very good but only for open chamber pistons. 063's and 206's are good closed chamber heads. It depends what type of engine you build. There are other good heads but it's too early to think straight.

You want to stick with a oval port head if it is for the street you can get that kind of power easy from them.

As far as open chamber or closed depends on the type of gas you want to use and the piston you will use.

The three biggest things i see that come in to my shop are over carburated,to much cam and to big of head.

Let me give some more info the block is bored .030 the cam I am going to run is a comp cam 280 duration .520 lift hydraulic lifter or a 280 grind roller cam and lifters. I have not bought pistons yet and want to run on pump gas.

Try to set it up so that you make from 9.5 to just a schosh under 10 to 1 CR. by juggling the down in the hole of your pistons, the headgasket thickness, piston top design and head chamber size!

This way you should still be able to run good pump gas.

Usually a true flat-top piston and a 98 cc closed chambered head like a -206 along with .020" thick steel shim headgaskets will get you about 9.4 on a 468" motor.

I use the ROSS Racing Pistons CR. calculator to check this stuff.

PS., and cc the old -206's b/c the books say they vary from 96.7 to 98 cc's!!

The cam you described is great for the street (Comp's 280H). Awesome mid-range,..been known to diplace internal body parts. You'll need at least 3.73's out back to keep this cam in it's happy range.

Whichever head you choose, have them machined for the larger valves.

Then top them with a good alum dual-plane intake, and a 750-850 vac-sec carb, and enjoy the ride!

As PDQ mentioned, that cam is gonna want compression, I have that in my 9.7:1 396 and the bottom-end is soft. Probably would like a 10:1+ motor.

Duly noted,..I have 10.5:1 compr. with alum heads on a 489 engine using the 280H cam and 3.90's out back with a 4-speed. Works great!

In a 454 with stock heads, a 3:55 gear or less, and an automatic, this cam will not be happy on the street. The 270H would be the choice here.

270 dur .510 lift -copy of ls-5 hyd. cam from isky.
How would this cam work in a 468 with stock 80's 'truck' heads and a 670cfm carb? Machine shop is putting pistons in to give me about 9.5:1 compression. I'm concerned with power from idle to 5000rpm, don't really care what it does past that.

I figure you will like the 270 Magnum!!

But if you are serious about the bottom end rpm, install either a CC 260HE or their XE256H.

I say this b/c the 270 Magnum starts off at 1500 rpm per CC's cat...

It's a trade-off is all, b/c I don't know how much low rpm towing/work you are going to do??

All the info is great I am building a 72 z28/rs it is on my rotisserie. I have a 700r4 that will back to the engine and a 3:73 posi. I am putting it all together for the hot rod power tour this june. I build 67-69 camaros everyday but really like the 2nd gen. and it seems like there popularity is starting to catch. Any other advice for the 454 build up is greatly appreciated.
