Hi there,

Will any Chevy big block 396 thru 454 fit in first generation Camaros?

There are some late 70s used big blocks available on the market and I wonder if they'd fit in? And truck big blocks?

Thanks,

Gordon

Yes for 396 to 454 with conventional induction systems. 496's and 502's fit fine too. The intakes on tall deck 427 engines (truck engine) might be too tall for the hood.

The oil pan may need to be changed to the OE style 4 quart pan that fits 1st gen F-bodies, or you can use one of the aftermarket pans that fit.

And only engines used in heavier trucks may be tall deck; light duty trucks used the "high perf/pass/truck" blocks that are more common to find.

Thats where I was going ^.Fred beat me to it.
What are your hp/torque goals and intended usage?
I would stick with a 9.8" deck height for fitment issues only..simple to grab 540 cid with a .030 over 502 and a 4.250" arm that will nestle in quite nicely, even with raised exhaust ports in the 0.400" range and off the shelf Hooker Comps.

There are a ton of tall deck big blocks out there. Avoid them for passenger cars. One major problem of the taller deck height is that it requires a different exhaust system.
