I've built a 12 bolt rear with a new Eaton posi and Moser axels with stock C clips. I checked the housing for straightness and it is straight. My question is have you ever used these axels before?
They are very tight in the splines and I have to use the butt of a hammer to get them all the way in to get the C clips in. Then use a puller to get them back. I checked the run out and the backlash before and after the axels with no difference noticed. I called Moser and asked their option and they said I should not worry about it. Have you had any experance with this? Seems really tight. Maybe that's good for a four speed car.

when my rear end started leaking gear oil out of the axle, i figured it was time for new bearings and seals. after pulling the axle's i noticed they were wiped out, so i got new gm axle's and when i went to install them they would not go in all the way with out putting a hammer to it. turn out i had warped the tubes when i welded new perches on? if its just tight in the splines i would say it's ok, but if it's putting pressure on the bearings i would check the tubes.

I have checked the rearend and it shows to be straight. With tires mounted and spinning the housing, there is on movement in the tires even with a tape measure on it. What's the best way to check the housing for straightness?

I never thought of checking a housing that way, but it should work fine. I check them with a fixture that I use for welding on the housing ends. I have used the Moser axles many times, and I don't remember them ever being that tight. Do you have a axle gear from another differential that you can slip on the splines to see if it is realy the axles?

Shown above is a jig that a friend and I made to check axle tube straightness with. It's made from aluminum stock. The back side is a rectangular tube with 4 bar stock "arms" sticking out which hold 2 pieces of bar stock (parallel to the backside) that you hold against the tubes of the axle housing (the gap in the middle goes around the rear ends center). We put the two parallel pieces on last, aligning them with a straight edge. Hey,it works !

I can't get my "picture" to look like I want it to; the right side keeps going to the middle !

I don't have another axle myself. I'll check with a friend to see if he has one.

I'm going to check the housing again and this time I'm using two straight bars against the axle flanges without the axles installed and see if there is any positive or negitive toe. It could be the axles are putting pressure on the housing tubes and making it straight. These axles are really strong!

If everything checks out OK, do you see any problem running it this way?

If the only thing that is wrong is the axles fit too tight in the axle gears, then it will be fine. If there is another problem, like a bent housing, then it could cause wear problems inside the differential.
